An ELISA method for detection of specific antibodies to morphine-protein conjugate (MPC) in humans and animals was elaborated. In humans, antibodies could be detected predominantly as the IgM class of immunoglobulins. Elevated levels of such antibodies were found in about 50% of opiate addicts and morphine-treated rats. In the case of prolonged and regular drug use with the time since the last drug intake not exceeding 2 months, elevated levels of antibodies to MPC were detected more frequently (up to 75%). Antibodies to MPC, detected in opiate addicts, were specific to MPC, morphine and beta-endorphin. A similar approach was applied to the detection of antibodies to ephedrone (amphetamine-like derivative of ephedrine) in case of its chronic use.

With mines extending deeper and rising surface temperatures, workers are exposed to hotter environments. This study aimed to characterize heat stress and strain in the Canadian mining industry and evaluate the utility of the Heat Strain Score Index (HSSI), combined with additional self-reported adverse health outcomes. An exploratory web-based survey was conducted among workers ( = 119) in the Canadian mining industry.

Hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis with polyneuropathy (ATTRv-PN) is a neurodegenerative disease caused by mutations in the gene encoding transthyretin (TTR). Despite amyloid deposition being pathognomonic for diagnosis, this pathology in nervous tissues cannot fully account for nerve degeneration, implying additional pathophysiology for neurodegeneration, which, however, has not yet been fully elucidated. In this study, neuroinflammation in ATTRv-PN was investigated by examining nerve morphometry, the blood-nerve barrier, and macrophage infiltration in the sural nerves of ATTRv-PN patients and the sciatic nerves of a complementary mouse system, i.

Background: Breast cancer (BC) is a global challenge that affects a large portion of individuals, especially women. It has been suggested that microparticles (MPs) can be used as a diagnostic, prognostic, or therapeutic biomarker in various diseases. Moreover, MPs are known to elevate in cancer cases.

Background: Gastric cancer (GC) ranks as the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with most patients diagnosed at advanced stages due to the absence of reliable early detection biomarkers.
Methods: RNA-sequencing was conducted to identify the differentially expressed genes between GC tissues and adjacent normal tissues. CCK8, EdU, colony formation, transwell, flow cytometry and xenograft assays were adopted to explore the biological function of ZBTB10 and betulinic acid (BA) in GC progression.

Context: Leukocytosis frequently noted in Cushing's syndrome (CS), along with other blood cell changes caused by direct and indirect cortisol effects.
Objective: Assess baseline white blood cell (WBC) profile in CS patients compared to controls and WBC changes pre- and post-remission after surgical treatment for CS.
Design: A comparative nationwide retrospective cohort study.
