Serum-lipid concentrations were determined in patients with type-IV hyperlipoproteinaemia treated with 900 mg/day oral DL-carnitine chloride. Serum-triglyceride was significantly reduced and concentrations continued to decline as carnitine administration continued. Total and esterified cholesterol concentrations did not change. Intravenous infusion of carnitine produced the same effects. The results suggest that carnitine is of value in the therapy of type-IV hyperliproteinaemia. Increased oxidation of free fatty acids in the tissues seems to account for the effects of carnitine on serum-lipid concentrations.

Objectives: As is well known, plaque morphology plays an important role in the hemodynamics of stenotic coronary arteries, thus their clinic outcomes. However, so far, there has been no research on how the cross-sectional shape of a stenotic lumen affects its hemodynamics. Therefore, this study aims to explore the impact of plaque cross-sectional shape on coronary hemodynamics under mild or moderate stenosis conditions (diameter stenosis degree ≤50 %).

Background: Currently, there is no clear standard for the surgical options for Evans-Jensen Type IV intertrochanteric femur fractures in elderly patients over 65 years old. This study aims to retrospectively analyze and compare the early postoperative limb function and quality of life of patients treated with total hip arthroplasty (THA) and proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) for this type of fracture. We hypothesize that there is no significant difference in complications and postoperative recovery between the two surgical methods.

Glycogen storage disease type IV (GSD IV) is a rare disease caused by a defect in glycogen branching enzyme 1 (GBE1), which played a crucial role in glycogen branching. GSD IV occurs once in approximately 1 in every 760,000 to 960,000 live births and is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern. Early diagnosis of GSD IV is challenging due to non-specific symptoms, such as liver and spleen enlargement, which can overlap with other hematologic and hepatobiliary disorders.

Background: In response to exercise-based pulmonary rehabilitation (PR), the type of muscle fibre remodelling differs between COPD patients with peripheral muscle wasting (atrophic patients with COPD) and those without wasting (nonatrophic patients with COPD). Extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins are major constituents of the cell micro-environment steering cell behaviour and regeneration. We investigated whether the composition of ECM in atrophic compared to nonatrophic patients with COPD differs in response to PR.

Background: Congenital biliary dilatation (CBD) is a congenital malformation of the main biliary tract usually associated with the pancreatobiliary maljunction (PBM), determining stone formation, cholangitis, pancreatitis, and cholangiocarcinoma. The role of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in treatment and diagnosis has not been established yet. Therefore, the aim of our study is to define the actual role of ERCP in children with CBD.
