Direct cardiac reprogramming or transdifferentiation is a relatively new and promising area in regenerative therapy, cardiovascular disease modeling, and drug discovery. Effective reprogramming of fibroblasts is limited by their plasticity, that is, their ability to reprogram, and depends on solving several levels of tasks: inducing cardiomyocyte-like cells and obtaining functionally and metabolically mature cardiomyocytes. Currently, in addition to the use of more classical approaches such as overexpression of exogenous transcription factors, activation of endogenous cardiac transcription factors via controlled nucleases, such as CRISPR, represents another interesting way to obtain cardiomyocytes.

Rapid metabolic fingerprinting meets machine learning models to identify authenticity and detect adulteration of essential oils with vegetable oils: Mentha and Ocimum study.

Food Chem

December 2024

International Joint Research Centre on Food Security, Pathum Thani 12120, Thailand; Institute for Global Food Security (IGFS), School of Biological Sciences, Queen's University Belfast (QUB), BT9 5DL, UK.

Essential oils (EOs) are gaining popularity due to their potent antibacterial properties, as well as their applications in food preservation and flavor enhancement, offering growth opportunities for the food industry. However, their widespread use as food preservatives is limited by authenticity challenges, primarily stemming from adulteration with cheaper oils. This study investigated a rapid, cost-effective, and non-destructive method for assessing the authenticity of widely used Mentha and Ocimum EOs.

Evaluating the Appropriateness of Selected Foundry Sands for the Casting of Reactor Housings: A Study Based on Physicochemical Characterization Outcomes.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

Faculty of Geology, Geophysics and Environmental Protection, AGH University of Krakow, al. A. Mickiewicza 30, 30-059 Krakow, Poland.

In the case of desulfurization and spheroization of cast iron using the in-mold method, in which the treated cast iron is poured into the reaction chamber and placed in the casting mold, the mineral raw material of the mold should support these processes. Therefore, it is important to know the physicochemical properties of the materials selected for the production of casting molds and to learn about the phenomena occurring during their pouring. The research presented in this paper was carried out on quartz, magnesite, chromite, and olivine sands.

Background: Insulin resistance (IR) is an important risk factor for multiple chronic diseases, increasing mortality and reducing life expectancy. The associations between emerging surrogates for IR, triglyceride-glucose index (TyG) and TyG-related indicators, with all-cause mortality and life expectancy in middle-aged and older patients in primary care are unclear.

Methods: This study originated from the Polish primary care cohort LIPIDOGRAM2015, including patients aged ≥45 years.
