The effects of the active heparin antagonist--1-vinyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide-maleic acid diethyl ether copolymer--on the blood coagulative system were investigated. The effect of polycation was shown to appear only when the therapeutical dose was significantly increased and to manifest itself in the development of hypocoagulation. Hypocoagulative changes occurred only by inhibiting the activity of clotting factors V and VIII. Also, there was a moderate reduction in platelet counts.

The efficient utilization of lignin, a pivotal component of lignocellulosic biomass, is crucial for advancing sustainable biorefinery processes. However, optimizing lignin valorization remains challenging due to its intricate structure and susceptibility to undesirable reactions during processing. In this study, we delve into the impact of various pretreatment agents on birch lignin, aiming to enhance its catalytic oxidation and depolymerization under polyoxometalates (POMs) catalysis.

Facile Synthesis of Thermoresponsive Alternating Copolymers with Tunable Phase-Transition Temperatures.

Polymers (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Polymer Materials, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Shanghai University, Shanghai 200444, China.

A series of novel amphiphilic alternating CPEG copolymers were synthesized through an amine-epoxy click reaction comprising aliphatic amine and polyethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (PEGDE). These polymers were characterized in detail via nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to confirm the successful synthesis. Due to their amphiphilic structure, these polymers display thermoresponsiveness, with tunable cloud points (Tcps) that are adjustable from 20.

Green propolis, particularly from the unique flora of the Brazilian Caatinga biome, has gained significant interest due to its diverse chemical composition and biological activities. This study focuses on the chemical characterization and antimicrobial evaluation of Caatinga green propolis. Twelve compounds were isolated through different chromatographic techniques, including flavanones (naringenin, 7--methyleriodictyol, sakuranetin), flavones (hispidulin, cirsimaritin), flavonols (quercetin, quercetin-3-methyl ether, kaempferol, 6-methoxykaempferol, viscosine, penduletin), and one chalcone (kukulkanin B).

Direct lithium extraction from unconventional resources requires the development of effective adsorbents. Crown ether-containing materials have been reported as promising structures in terms of lithium selectivity, but data on adsorption in real, highly saline brines are scarce. Crown ether-grafted graphene oxides were synthesized using 2-hydroxymethyl-12-crown-4, hydroxy-dibenzo-14-crown-4 and epichlorohydrin as a source of anchoring groups.

The development of inhaled anesthetics (IAs) has a rich history dating back many centuries. In modern times they have played a pivotal role in anesthesia and critical care by allowing deep sedation during periods of critical illness and surgery. In addition to their sedating effects, they have many systemic effects allowing for therapy beyond surgical anesthesia.
