Violet phosphorus (VP) is a phosphorus allotrope first discovered by Hittorf in 1865, which has aroused more attention in the biomedical field in recent years attributed to its gradually discovered unique properties. VP can be further categorized into bulk VP, VP nanosheets (VPNs), and VP quantum dots (VPQDs), and chemical vapor transport (CVT), liquid-phase/mechanical/laser exfoliation, and solvothermal synthesis are the common preparation approaches of bulk VP, VPNs, and VPQDs, respectively. Compared with another phosphorus allotrope (black phosphorus, BP) that is once highly regarded in biomedical applications, VP nanomaterial (namely VPNs and VPQDs) not only exhibits tunable bandgap, moderate on/off current ratio, and good biodegradability, but shows enhanced stability and biosafety as well, allowing it to be a promising candidate for a variety of biomedical applications like antibacterial therapy, anticancer therapy, and biosensing and disease diagnosis.

Background: Folpet is a nonspecific sulfonamide fungicide widely used to protect crops from mildew. However, the in vivo effects of folpet on glucose metabolism homeostasis, gut microbiota, and abundance of drug resistance genes remain unknown. Pesticide application is essential for stabilizing agricultural production. However, the effects of increasing pesticide diversity on soil microbial functions remain unclear, particularly under varying nitrogen (N) fertilizer management practices. In this study, we investigated the stochasticity of soil microbes and multitrophic networks through amplicon sequencing, assessed soil community functions related to carbon (C), N, phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S) cycling, and characterized the dominant bacterial life history strategies via metagenomics along a gradient of increasing pesticide diversity under two N addition levels.

Characterization and functional analysis of type III polyketide synthases in Selaginella moellendorffii.

The evolutionary conservation of type III polyketide synthases (PKS) in Selaginella has been elucidated, and the critical amino acid residues of the anther-specific chalcone synthase-like enzyme (SmASCL) have been identified. Selaginella species are the oldest known vascular plants and a valuable resource for the study of metabolic evolution in land plants. Polyketides, especially flavonoids and sporopollenin precursors, are essential prerequisites for plant land colonization.
