Alterations of the three-phase bone scan after sympathectomy.

Published: June 1994

Objective: To evaluate alterations of the three-phase bone scan (TPBS) in patients with the clinical diagnosis of reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) before and after surgical or chemical sympathectomy.

Design: The TPBS was done after i.v. administration of 99technetium dimethylphosphonate. Scans were read by one blinded and one nonblinded reviewer (as to site of symptoms and procedure), using a visual grading system devised in our institution. Since there were no statistically significant differences between the two examiners' scores for blood flow, pool, and delayed phases, all scores were averaged and used for comparison before and after sympathectomy.

Subjects: Ten women and four men with RSD were observed with 17 TPBSs before and 30 TPBSs after surgical (n = 6) or chemical (n = 8) sympathectomy.

Results: All three phases of TPBS were significantly enhanced after sympathectomy in 11 of 14 patients in a pattern indistinguishable from that very commonly reported in florid RSD. The increased uptake occurred within 24 h after the procedure, normalized as early as 3 months in some scans, and remained abnormal in some patients in the 12-month follow-up period. In total, only 33% of all sympathectomies performed led to long-term symptom relief.

Conclusions: The data demonstrated that alterations in TPBS after sympathectomy are identical to those reported in early RSD and these alterations bear no relationship to the success of sympathectomy regarding pain relief. The mechanisms underlying alterations of TPBS as well as the potential mechanisms of sympathectomy failures are discussed.

The operation and efficiency of isolated DC-DC converters, critical components in solid-state transformers, are significantly impacted by leakage inductance in high-frequency transformers (HFTs). Different converters have varying demands regarding leakage inductance, ranging from precise control to minimal inductance. For instance, the performance of bidirectional isolated converters (BIDCs) and resonant converters is dependent on leakage inductance for the delivery of power.

Cigar Fermentation Technology Key Laboratory of China Tobacco, Cigar Technology Innovation Center of China Tobacco, China Tobacco Sichuan Industrial Co., Ltd., Chengdu, China.

Introduction: In order to enhance the quality of cigar tobacco leaves (CTLs), a gradient variable temperature fermentation approach was employed.

Methods: The temperature gradient demonstrated a gradual increase from low temperature (35 ± 2°C) to moderate temperature (45 ± 2°C), and then to high temperature (55 ± 2°C). Each temperature gradient underwent a 10-day fermentation process, resulting in a total duration of 30 days.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on creating efficient catalysts, specifically NiFeO/CeO composites, to improve lithium-oxygen battery performance by enhancing the three-phase reaction at the cathode side.
  • - These composites feature a micro-flower structure that increases accessibility to active sites and combines the benefits of NiFeO's oxygen evolution and CeO's oxygen reduction activities.
  • - The developed catalyst achieves impressive results, including 343 stable cycles, a round-trip efficiency of 97.8%, and a discharge capacity of 7478 mAh/g, showcasing potential for fast charging and long-lasting performance.

Bone metabolism in complex regional pain syndrome.

Pain Rep

December 2024

Department of Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care, Emergency and Pain Medicine, Centre for Interdisciplinary Pain Medicine, University Hospital Würzburg, Würzburg, Germany.

Introduction: Patients with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) often show disturbed bone metabolism, assessed using three-phase bone scintigraphy (TPBS). However, current methods lack automation and standardisation. Bone serum markers have been proposed as biomarkers, but their utility is unclear.

Introduction: Multi-modal analgesia is desirable for the management of acute pain since it can provide effective pain relief at lower doses, thereby aiding tolerability. Co-crystal of tramadol-celecoxib (CTC) provides effective analgesia in models of acute pain. Co-crystallization can alter the pharmacokinetics of individual components, potentially improving tolerability.
