The ionization method for determination of the energy deposited in sensitive sites of irradiated objects is usually used with the assumption that deposited energy is directly proportional to the number of ionizations in a site. This assumption fails in two cases important for nanometer-sized sites: (1) when the fluctuation characteristics of deposited energy such as higher moments, probability distributions, etc. are determined instead of the mean value; (2) when the radiation field in a site is spatially non-uniform. In this paper both cases are investigated. Exact formulae connecting energy and ionization quantities (moments, cumulants, probability distributions) are established as well as practical procedures to obtain energy quantities from those of ionization. The validity of the direct proportionality principle is analyzed and approximate methods to correct it are proposed. Some microdosimetric results are presented. The solution of these problems required that we refine some known notions and introduce new terms. In particular, in the paper the necessity of distinguishing two distinct types of events and correspondingly two sets of microdosimetric quantities is noted; new radiation parameters such as the fluctuation W value and non-equivalence factor for the events are defined and investigated numerically.

Nitrosamine impurities, particularly nitrosamine drug substance-related impurities (NDSRIs), pose significant health risks due to their potential mutagenicity and carcinogenicity. Consequently, stringent regulatory guidelines have been established for their detection and quantification in pharmaceutical products. This study presents a simple, robust, and ultrasensitive liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method to quantify the -nitroso-dabigatran etexilate (NDE) impurity in the drugs and capsules of dabigatran etexilate (DEM) using an electrospray ionization technique.

The direct application of cold plasmas at atmospheric pressure, corresponding to partially ionized gases, is an emerging technology with a number of potential biomedical applications, including the decontamination of surgical devices. A new derived and easier to implement method has recently been developed: the use of cold atmospheric plasma-activated media (PAM). Numerous preclinical studies and in vitro models indicates that PAM treatments facilitate wound healing by promoting keratinocytes and fibroblasts migration, stimulating angiogenesis, and inhibiting bacterial proliferation, all of which are essential for this vital process.

To overcome the time-consuming off-site limitations in conventional pesticide detection, this contribution presents an in situ quantitative analysis detection strategy for pesticides on leaf surfaces using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry imaging technology. Taking fungicide metrafenone as a representative, we initially screened seven commonly used matrices, and identifying α-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid as the most effective one in positive mode. Subsequently, coating the matrix using sublimation spraying method resulted in the highest mass intensity.

The rapid development and worldwide distribution of COVID-19 vaccines is a remarkable achievement of biomedical research and logistical implementation. However, these developments are associated with the risk of a surge of substandard and falsified (SF) vaccines, as illustrated by the 184 incidents with SF and diverted COVID-19 vaccines which have been reported during the pandemic in 48 countries, with a paucity of methods for their detection in supply chains. In this context, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation-time of flight (MALDI-ToF) mass spectrometry (MS) is globally available for fast and accurate analysis of bacteria in patient samples, offering a potentially accessible solution to identify SF vaccines.

Precise measurements of fundamental decay data such as energies and transition probabilities of radioactive isotopes are important for the development of corresponding nuclear modelling, activity determination and various applications in science and technology. The EMPIR project PrimA-LTD -"Towards new Primary Activity standardisation methods based on Low-Temperature Detectors" - aims to measure the electron-capture decay of Fe very precisely using Metallic Microcalorimeters (MMCs) with outstandingly high energy resolution. Using a high-statistics measurement, electron-capture probabilities shall be precisely determined and higher-order effects such as electron shake-up and shake-off shall be examined with unprecedented precision.
