For children the parental divorce creates a risk for their psychological development. When referred to the child psychiatrist because of their conduct disorder these children are often compared by their custodial parents with the absent parent. As a clinically useful concept the concept of collusive partner substitute can explain the underlying intrapsychic as well as the interpersonal defense mechanisms. With reference to a case report the author demonstrates how a collusive dyadic relationship of the parents which ends because of divorce may continue with the help of the child in the role of a collusive partner substitute.

Purpose Of Review: Whilst research indicates the positive impact of social support across a number of health domains, including weight management, not all social support is beneficial.

Recent Findings: This paper reviews the evidence for both positive and negative social support in the context of behavioural interventions and surgery for obesity. It then presents a new model of negative social support focusing on sabotage ('active and intentional undermining of another person's weight goals'), feeding behaviour ('explicit over feeding of someone when they are not hungry or wishing not to eat'), and collusion ('passive and benign negative social support to avoid conflict') which can be conceptualised within the context of relationships as systems and the mechanisms of homeostasis.

This paper examines the question of why the pattern of narcissistic object-relating (collusion) develops early in life and how it may impact the lifelong process of individuation. Narcissistic adult couple relationships are one of the arenas in which unresolved aspects of the past, alive in the present, are unconsciously brought and endlessly repeated with intensity. Adult relationships are often formed in the hope that both partners will wipe out their old wounds.

This paper introduces the concept of "dissociative collusion" as a helpful theoretical and clinical tool for understanding and working with clients with histories of trauma in couple therapy. The paper describes ways to diagnose and treat dissociative collusion based on the integration of an object relations approach, a relational approach, and a narrative approach. Dissociative collusion, a unique version of the well-documented "couple collusion," describes relational unconscious dynamics where split-off aspects of one or both partners are mutually dissociated in a complementary fashion that becomes a part of the shared unconscious and is reenacted in destructive ways.

A recent study in Nature (Szczerba et al. 2019;566:553-557) reports that the association of neutrophils with circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in the blood of patients with breast cancer can promote CTC proliferation and metastasis. These findings reveal a new mechanism by which the innate immune system may be co-opted to drive tumor progression.
