The polyketide specialized metabolites of bacteria are attractive targets for generating analogues, with the goal of improving their pharmaceutical properties. Here, we aimed to produce C-26 derivatives of the giant anti-cancer stambomycin macrolides using a mutasynthesis approach, as this position has been shown previously to directly impact bioactivity. For this, we leveraged the intrinsically broad specificity of the acyl transferase domain (AT) of the modular polyketide synthase (PKS), which is responsible for the alkyl branching functionality at this position.

Fasting for male fertility-a mixed methods study.

Front Nutr

January 2025

Institute of Social Medicine, Epidemiology, and Health Economics, Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Corporate Member of Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Berlin, Germany.

Purpose: Approximately 10-20% of couples in Germany are unable to conceive. About 50% of this subfertility can be attributed to the male partner. Preclinical studies suggest that fasting could potentially influence central mechanisms of spermatogenesis.

Nanostructured devices have proven useful in a broad range of applications, from diagnosing diseases to discovering and screening new drug molecules. We developed vertical silicon nanopillar (SiNP) arrays for on-chip multiplex capture of selected biomolecules using a light-induced release of the array's selectively captured biomarkers. This platform allows the rapid, reusable and quantitative capture and release of a selection of biomarkers, followed by their downstream analysis.

This study reports the preparation of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) from commercial bleached eucalyptus Kraft pulp (BEKP) using a hydrothermal treatment in the presence of maleic acid (MA), followed by high-pressure homogenization. Compared with conventional hydrolysis methods, this approach offers significant advantages, including lower acid concentration, higher yield, and milder processing conditions. CNCs were produced with a high yield (70-85 wt %) by high-pressure homogenization of hydrothermally treated BEKP fibers with 10-20 wt % maleic acid at 150 °C, giving rise to a stable translucent gel of CNCs with a rod-like morphology (200-400 nm length and 10-40 nm width).

Tolerability and effectiveness of face-masks in reducing cough aerosols for children with cystic fibrosis.

J Cyst Fibros

January 2025

The Prince Charles Hospital, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia; Faculty of Medicine, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia; Child Health Research Centre, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Electronic address:

Background: People with cystic fibrosis (CF) are recommended to wear face-masks when in healthcare settings. We previously demonstrated that face-masks significantly reduce the release of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) aerosols during coughing in adults with CF.
