The contribution of some adaptation hormones to the process regulating production of autoantibodies to collagen (Abc) and elastin (Abe) was studied in leprosy (37 patients) and tuberculosis (31 patients). In both mycobacterioses the Abc and Abe titers were increased and inversely correlated with endogenous cortisol levels. In leprosy the antibody titers directly correlated with the triiodothyronine (T3) levels which were significantly higher than the values in healthy controls. A new approach to research for remedies and methods of preventing and curing autosensitization to connective tissue is suggested by combining medications according to individual endocrine and immune indices.

Recent observations indicate that autoimmune disorders and allergies are more closely connected to each other than traditionally considered. Both diseases are characterized by a break of immunological tolerance and in both Th1- and Th2-driven mechanisms may be involved. Moreover, patients suffering from severe chronic atopic diseases have been shown to develop autoreactive antibodies and vice versa autoreactive IgE antibodies may contribute to the perpetuation of allergic immune responses.

The gametogenic potential of young male CBA/Ca mice aged 4-5 months was compared with that of animals 20-23 months of age which had recently ceased to sire offspring. The older mice had substantially lower circulating levels of testosterone and smaller testes. Testicular and epididymal spermatozoa were reduced in number, had more abnormal forms and fewer were progressively motile.

Some evidence is presented for usableness of tanned erythrocytes in electrophoretic mobility (TEEM)-test. Two possibilities of application of TEEM-test for immunological investigation in multiple sclerosis are discussed: detection of lymphocyte sensitization against a soluble antigen (3 M KCl extracted) derived from a normal brain and measurement of mixed lymphocyte reactin (MLR) after a short-time lymphocyte culture. Results show some connection between autosensitization (TEEM-test using normal tissue antigen) and predisposition (TEEM-MLR-test).

The main symptom in immunologic diseases of the gut is diarrhea. This is true for heterosensitization as well as for autosensitization, for local as well as for generalized diseases. Since the immunopathogenetic mechanism is connected with the presence of the antigen, the manifestation is depending on its local and temporal persistence.
