We have compared the operational, medical, and fiscal consequences of performing urgent glucose testing at the bedside vs in the central laboratory. The turnaround time (TAT) with bedside testing was only 1-2 min shorter than that from the central laboratory, to which specimens are sent by pneumatic tube and from which results are automatically broadcast by computer to the originating site. No significant adverse medical outcomes were associated with this difference in TAT. The cost of bedside testing is approximately twice that of central laboratory testing.

The C3 protein is the central molecule within the complement system and undergoes proteolytic activation to C3b in the presence of pathogens. Pattern-independent activation of C3 also occurs via hydrolysis, resulting in C3(HO), but the structural details of C3 hydrolysis remain elusive. Here we show that the conformation of the C3(HO) analog, C3MA, is indistinguishable from C3b.

The pathogenesis of Lewy body diseases (LBDs), including Parkinson's disease (PD), involves α-synuclein (α-Syn) aggregation that originates in peripheral organs and spreads to the brain. PD incidence is increased in individuals with chronic renal failure, but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. Here we observed α-Syn deposits in the kidneys of patients with LBDs and in the kidney and central nervous system of individuals with end-stage renal disease without documented LBDs.

The context of rapid global environmental change underscores the pressing necessity to investigate the environmental factors and high-risk areas that contribute to the occurrence of brucellosis. In this study, a maximum entropy (MaxEnt) model was employed to analyze the factors influencing brucellosis in the Aksu Prefecture from 2014 to 2023. A distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) was employed to investigate the lagged effect of meteorological factors on the occurrence of brucellosis.

Based on a prototype of the Beijing subway tunnel, this research conducts large-scale model experiments to systematically investigate the vibration response patterns of tunnels with different damage levels under the influence of measured train loads. Initially, the polynomial fitting modal identification method (Levy) and the model test preparation process are introduced. Then, using time-domain peak acceleration, frequency response function, frequency-domain modal frequency, and modal shape indicators, a detailed analysis of the tunnel's dynamic response is conducted.

Central Asia is an ecologically fragile arid zone and a typical mixed salt‒sand region. The socioeconomic and ecological problems attributed to the shrinking of the Aral Sea in Central Asia are notable concerns within the international community. In this study, the characteristics of salt dust aerosols from the Aral Sea were analysed to explore their interannual variation characteristics and analyse the spatial and temporal distributions of salt dust sources and transport and dispersion pathways.
