Published: September 1994

We reanalysed the current staging systems for retinoblastoma, the classification of retinoblastoma for prognosis by Reese and Ellsworth and the new Essen prognosis classification for conservative sight-saving therapy by univariant analysis. We compared the value of those classifications with one another.

Global, regional and national burden due to retinoblastoma in children aged younger than 10 years from 1990 to 2021.

BMC Med

December 2024

Guangdong Eye Institute, Department of Ophthalmology, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital (Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences), Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, China.

Background: Retinoblastoma (RB), an aggressive intraocular malignancy, significantly adds to the global disease burden in early childhood. This study offers insights into the global burden of retinoblastoma (RB) in children aged 0-9 years, examining incidence, mortality, and DALYs from 1990 to 2021, across age, sex, location, and SDI levels. It aims to inform health policy, resource allocation, and RB combat strategies.

Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most prevalent secondary sarcoma associated with retinoblastoma (RB). However, the molecular mechanisms driving the interactions between these two diseases remain incompletely understood. This study aims to explore the transcriptomic commonalities and molecular pathways shared by RB and OS, and to identify biomarkers that predict OS prognosis effectively.

Retinoblastoma tumor suppressor proteins (Rb) are highly conserved metazoan transcriptional corepressors involved in regulating the expression of thousands of genes. The vertebrate lineage and the Drosophila genus independently experienced an Rb gene duplication event, leading to the expression of several Rb paralogs whose unique and redundant roles in gene regulation remain to be fully explored. Here, we used a novel CRISPRi system in Drosophila to identify the significance of paralogy in the Rb family.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the effectiveness of adding Ketorolac to traditional pupil-dilating medications in children undergoing procedures for retinoblastoma under anesthesia.
  • Results showed that using the new four-drug combination reduced the average anesthesia time from 25 minutes to 16 minutes, representing a 36% decrease.
  • The findings suggest that the new combination not only reduces anesthesia duration for children but also decreases the overall exposure to anesthetic gases for medical staff and minimizes the trauma associated with multiple eye drops.

Purpose: To study the inner and outer retinal functions using a full-field electroretinogram (ERG) before and after intravenous chemotherapy (IVC) in children with retinoblastoma (RB).

Methods: Of the 11 eyes, seven had RB and four were normal. All children were examined under anesthesia using a handheld ERG machine with a standard protocol - light-adapted single-flash ERG (fERG), photopic single-flash 3.
