Background: The use of family genograms is an important component in family practice, yet little has been written about curriculum for teaching genograms in medical school. Since 1981, the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, has conducted a behavioral science seminar for fourth-year students on their required 8-week ambulatory care clerkship. At one site, this seminar includes presentation of the students' personal genograms. This report describes the curriculum and a study to determine whether students understood genograms or used them in clinical settings.
Methods: We compared students' perceptions of the usefulness of genograms and genogram documentation in new patient assessments. Students at two sites were given pre- and postclerkship questionnaires, and a random sample of charts was reviewed for documentation of genograms.
Results: Students in the genogram demonstration group increased significantly in their stated use of genograms. Surprisingly, the group of students not exposed to the genogram curriculum were more likely to have genograms with more details recorded in the patients' charts.
Conclusion: These results imply that there were initial differences in the two groups and that didactic teaching must be complemented with clinical supervision. Also, the results have implications for specific areas in need of faculty development.

Background: Systemic therapy (ST) was approved as a further psychotherapy approach in line with the German Psychotherapy Directive's requirements in 2020 for adults and in 2024 for children and adolescents, and is thus covered by statutory health insurance.
Methods: Selective literature review on the theoretical foundations and clinical practice of ST, including recent meta-analyses of its efficacy.
Results: The theoretical foundations of ST include systems and communication theory, moderate constructivism, the multigenerational perspective, and, in some manuals, the attachment perspective.

Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) is a genetic form of diabetes with an autosomal dominant pattern of transmission characterized by dysfunction in pancreatic β-cells. MODY type 3 (MODY 3) is caused by heterozygous mutations in the hepatocyte nuclear factor 1-α (HNF1A) gene and is sensitive to treatment with sulfonylureas. This case report approaches the diagnostic journey of a 46-year-old woman who was initially misdiagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

In therapy, the child is mainly seen as a problem to be labeled or as a victim of various forms of abuse. The idea of the child as a therapeutic resource is the central point of my article where children's symptoms are quickly reframed and get a relational meaning in the family. Once the relational competence of the child is appreciated and his voice is heard, the child becomes a special guide to explore the emotional world of his family, and the genogram can provide a wonderful platform to start this therapeutic journey.

Genetic counseling facilitates psychological and social adaptation in clients and families. Two psychotherapeutic approaches, narrative and family therapy foster client adaptation to adverse situations and may enhance the genetic counseling process. This scoping review aimed to describe the applications of narrative therapy and family therapy in genetic counseling, and to document the actual and perceived value of these approaches in a genetic counseling setting.
