For operant self-administration, permanent intravenous cannulas need to remain open and operational for months without infections or blockages. Here, we report retrospectively on our experiences and observations using different access systems during three studies. We identified a refined method for vena jugularis cannulation that is a vast improvement for the animals, biotechnicians and researchers.

Introduction: Metallic luster dusts are decorative agents for cakes and other confections. While some powders are labeled "non-edible," they are also marketed as "non-toxic." We present a case of a child who developed acute metal pneumonitis after accidental aspiration of metallic luster dust.

Rationale: Among 3 forms of mercury, elemental mercury vapor presents the highest threat due to its potential to cause acute pneumonitis. The management of acute mercury vapor poisoning remains unclear, particularly in acute lung injury. We present a case of mercury vapor poisoning resulting from the heating of cinnabar, successfully treated with high-dose corticosteroids and chelation therapy, and follow-up over 6 months.

Can the chemically synthesized nanoparticles act as nanodevices or nanomachines? Herein, we demonstrated this feasibility. A novel nanocluster (ultrasmall nanoparticle) [AuCd(m-MBT)][N(CH)] (AuCd in short, m-MBTH: m-methylbenzenethiol) obtained via developing a synthesis method has a cannula-like structure of the outer shell and an internal sleeve, revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Natural population analysis (NPA) charge calculations, charge carrier transport of AuCd (during which an intra-nanocluster anti-galvanic reaction was observed) after unneutral charging using NaBH as well as voltammetry proved the capacitor-like character of AuCd.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to present a new ab interno approach and relevant case series using a polymer-tipped cannula for the removal of metallic foreign bodies that penetrate the full thickness of the cornea and are located in the posterior corneal region.
Methods: Corneal foreign bodies located on the posterior side of the cornea were gently pushed toward the epithelial side with a polymer-tipped cannula placed using a side-port incision, to be removed without damaging the corneal endothelial layer. The polymer-tipped cannula is specially angled to keep it at a distance from the corneal endothelial layer.
