Insights into the ecological and climate crisis: emerging infections threatening human health.

Acta Trop

January 2025

Clinic of Infectious Diseases, Department of Precision and Regenerative Medicine and Ionian Area (DiMePRe-J), University of Bari "Aldo Moro", 70124 Bari, Italy.

The Anthropocene era is marked by unprecedented human-induced alterations to the environment, resulting in a climate emergency and widespread ecological deterioration. A staggering number of up to one million species of plants and animals are in danger of becoming extinct, which includes over 10% of insect species and 40% of plant species. Unrestrained release of greenhouse gases, widespread deforestation, intense agricultural practices, excessive fishing, and alterations in land use have exceeded the ecological boundaries that were once responsible for humanity's wellbeing.

Surveillance of Clostridioides difficile on hospital admission and outpatient antibiotic use in Germany-a 9 year ecological analysis.

J Antimicrob Chemother

January 2025

Institute for Hygiene and Environmental Medicine, Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Joint institution of Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt-Universität Berlin, Institut für Hygiene und Umweltmedizin, Campus Benjamin Franklin, Hindenburgdamm 27, 12203 Berlin, Germany.

Background: Antibiotic consumption is considered an important risk factor for Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI). This ecological analysis investigates the influence of outpatient antibiotic prescriptions in statutory health insurance (SHI) on the admission prevalence of CDI in German hospitals participating in voluntary CDI surveillance through the hospital infection surveillance system (Krankenhaus-Infektions-Surveillance-System; KISS).

Methods: The annual CDI admission prevalence of a hospital at the federal state level was associated with the outpatient antibiotic consumption of the corresponding federal state.

Water Heater Type, Temperature Setting, Operational Conditions, and Insulation Affect Ecological Niches for Growth.

ACS ES T Water

January 2025

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia 24061, United States.

Residential water heating represents an important nexus of energy/water conservation, waterborne disease, hygiene, and consumer preference. Here, we examine attributes of two off-the-shelf 151-L tank water heaters, one with hot water recirculation (recirculating) and another without recirculation (standard), compared to a tankless on-demand heater (on-demand). Energy efficiency decreased in the order on-demand > standard > continuous recirculation.

Changes in social zeitgebers across the lifespan affect the interaction between biological and social clocks, potentially contributing to social jetlag. Extant literature suggests a reduction in social jetlag given declining social obligations occurring after retirement, but is limited to self-reported methods and cross-sectional designs. Leveraging longitudinal and ecologically valid data from consumer sleep technology, we analysed objective sleep data from 2439 users of the polysomnography-validated SleepScore mobile application, encompassing 500,415 total nights recorded.

Objectives: Chronic skin diseases (CSD) may lead to productivity losses. This mixed-methods study investigated symptom severity, social challenges, need for workplace accommodation, sick leave and their association with perceived impaired work performance (IWP) among workers with CSD.

Methods: Data were collected from April to June 2023.
