Video-thoracoscopy can be used for diagnostic purposes when the other non-invasive methods are not satisfactory for an accurate histological diagnosis, in lung and pleural pathology. Cases observed in last six months and subject to surgery are discussed.

Objectives: Minimally invasive anatomic segmentectomy for the resection of pulmonary nodules has significantly increased in the last few years. Nevertheless, there is limited evidence on the safety and feasibility of robotic segmentectomy compared to video-assisted thoracic surgery. This study aimed to compare the real-world early outcomes of robotic and video-thoracoscopic surgery in anatomic segmentectomy.

A metabolomics study on carcinogenesis of ground-glass nodules.

Cytojournal

March 2024

Department of Thoracic Surgery, Institute of Thoracic Surgery, First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University, Suzhou, China.

Objective: This study aimed to identify differential metabolites and key metabolic pathways between lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) tissues and normal lung (NL) tissues using metabolomics techniques, to discover potential biomarkers for the early diagnosis of lung cancer.

Material And Methods: Forty-five patients with primary ground-glass nodules (GGN) identified on computed tomography imaging and who were willing to undergo surgery at Shanghai General Hospital from December 2021 to December 2022 were recruited to the study. All participants underwent video thoracoscopy surgery with segmental or wedge resection of the lung.

Background: Video-assisted thoracoscopic segmentectomies have become the gold standard for the treatment of early-stage non-small cell lung cancer less than two centimeters. The main difficulty is the identification of intersegmental boundary lines which dictate postoperative morbidities.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective study to compare the perioperative outcomes of patients who underwent minimally invasive segmentectomy using the traditional deflation-inflation method or the novel indocyanine green (ICG) technique.

Rationale: Lemierre-like syndrome (LLS) is characterized by bacteremia, septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein, and metastatic abscesses. In contrast to classic Lemierre syndrome, sources of infection are not related to oropharyngeal infections, as are frequent soft tissue infections. In recent years, Staphylococcus aureus has been identified as an emergent pathogen that causes this syndrome.

Article Synopsis
  • The Lungsco01 study is the first to evaluate the effectiveness and economic impact of video-thoracoscopy compared to open thoracotomy for treating non-small cell lung cancer in France, involving 259 patients from 10 medical centers over a four-year period.
  • Results indicated that the average costs for open thoracotomy were lower than for video-thoracoscopy at both 30 days and 3 months post-surgery, with video-thoracoscopy showing a higher incremental cost-utility ratio per additional quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) gained.
  • The analysis revealed a 64% probability that video-thoracoscopy was cost-effective at the 30-day mark
