This study investigated the temperature of healthy oral mucosa and underlying bone. Using a fine thermocouple and digital thermometer, four groups of temperatures were measured: (i) adjacent to unerupted third molars before and after surgical removal (n = 51); (ii) at the same site in patients not undergoing surgery (n = 30); and (iii) at the buccal incisor mucosa (n = 30). In each group sublingual temperatures were measured in order to calculate the temperature differential between measurement site and sublingual temperature to compensate for variations between sites and individuals. In the final group (iv) (n = 10) sublingual temperature was recorded in a closed mouth. Mean alveolar bone temperature was 5 degrees C cooler than overlying mucosa, and mean post-operative mucosal temperature was some 2.5 degrees C cooler than before operation (t = 2.32, P < 0.001). Sublingual temperature, in a closed mouth, remained relatively constant. In an open mouth, in both anterior and posterior regions, there were statistically significant decreases in sublingual temperature and in mucosal temperature differentials. Significant differences were also found between temperature differentials calculated using sublingual temperature measured at baseline and after 10 min. This indicates that sublingual temperature should be measured just prior to measuring a mucosal site.

Drug loaded microfiber scaffolds have potential for sublingual or buccal drug delivery due to their fast dissolution time and tunable porosity. Such microfiber scaffolds can be prepared by melt electrowriting (MEW), wherein a polymer melt is electrostatically drawn out of a syringe onto a computer controlled moving collector. The fabrication of such scaffolds via MEW has previously been shown for a polymer with a glass transition temperature (T) just above room temperature, making handling challenging.

Maximal gross-muscular performance shows a daily variation in adult males, however, effects of sleep loss on circadian rhythms of gross-muscular tasks with a high skill element such as the standing broad jump is less well established, and differences between biological sex may exist. Thirty-one males and 24 females volunteered. Participants were familiarised with tests before completing two conditions i) Normal (N) retires at 23:30, rising at 07:30 h the night before testing, and ii) Sleep deprivation (SD) retiring at 03:00, rising at 07:30 h, administered in a randomised counterbalanced-fashion.

Background: Few studies have investigated optimal storage conditions or expiration dates for sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) formulations prepared from glycerinated allergen extracts.
Hypothesis/objectives: The objective of this study was to compare concentrations of short ragweed major allergen (Amb a 1) and total protein in SLIT formulations stored at two different temperatures. It was hypothesised that protein concentrations would show greater decline over time in a formulation stored at room temperature (RT) than in one stored under refrigeration.
