Purpose Of Review: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can cause significant psychological, physical, and economic burdens on patients and healthcare systems. Studies show over one-fifth of patients will seek nontraditional methods of treatment for managing their symptoms. Understanding the benefits - and potential harms - of these therapies is important to provide holistic and evidence-based care to our IBD patients.

Application of spray-dried bacteriocins as cheese biopreservatives.

Int J Food Microbiol

January 2025

Instituto de Investigaciones para la Industria Química, Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas, Universidad Nacional de Salta (INIQUI-CONICET-UNSa), Av. Bolivia 5150, A4408FVY Salta, Argentina; Facultad Ciencias de la Salud, Universidad Nacional de Salta (UNSa), Av. Bolivia 5150, A4408FVY Salta, Argentina. Electronic address:

Listeria monocytogenes can contaminate refrigerated ready-to-eat foods, such as cheeses. Enterocins, with a strong listericidal effect, constitute a natural alternative to control this pathogen in food. To optimize their antimicrobial action in food matrices, bacteriocins can be immobilised in edible coatings through spray drying technology which allows the large-scale production of microcapsules of bioactive molecules.

Colon cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality worldwide, necessitating advancements in therapeutic strategies to improve outcomes. Current treatment modalities, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, are limited by systemic toxicity, low drug utilization rates, and off-target effects. Colon-targeted drug delivery systems (CDDS) offer a promising alternative by leveraging the colon's unique physiology, such as near-neutral pH and extended transit time, to achieve localized and controlled drug release.

Preparation and characterization of the octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) modified sphingan WL gum as novel biopolymeric surfactants.

Int J Biol Macromol

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Heavy Oil Processing and Centre for Bioengineering and Biotechnology, China University of Petroleum (East China), Qingdao, Shandong, People's Republic of China. Electronic address:

Combining polymer and surfactant in one agent namely polymeric surfactants with both high viscosity and surface activity has become a viable alternative for the traditional enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes. With the purpose of developing new polymeric surfactants, the biopolymer flooding agent sphingan WL gum was modified by octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) through the esterification reaction. The effects of molecular weight (MW) of WL and the OSA: WL ratio on the properties of the products were investigated.

Gellan-amino acid hydrogel-based bioreactor for optimizing the production of yeast metabolites.

Carbohydr Polym

March 2025

Biochemical Engineering Research & Process Development Centre (BERPDC), Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Sector-39A, Chandigarh 160036, India; Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR), Ghaziabad 201002, India. Electronic address:

Hydrogels mimic natural environments due to their hydrated, polymeric networks which are beneficial for microorganism growth. The substantial water content maintains a consistently moist environment, and porous structure of hydrogel promotes efficient nutrient transfer and cell distribution, offering advantages over traditional liquid bioreactors. While their application in cell immobilization for bioconversion is well-known, their use as a solid-state fermentation matrix remains unexplored.
