[Automatic ultrasound-guided fine needle biopsy of the transplanted kidney. Risks and uses].

Published: September 1994

Renal allograft biopsy is very valuable in the assessment of graft dysfunction, but complications are frequent and graft loss has even been described. Between 1991 and 1993, a total of 133 graft biopsies were done. We used an automated biopsy gun with a fine-caliber core needle (diameter 1.2 mm) under ultrasound guidance. Histological diagnosis was possible in 95.5% of the biopsies. On average 5.5 glomerula per specimen were obtained. This method proved to be safe, surgical intervention becoming necessary in 2 cases (1.5%).

Objective: Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration is a vital tool for mediastinal and hilar lymph node staging in patients with lung cancer. Despite its high diagnostic performance and safety, it has a limited negative predictive value. Our objective was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of deep learning-based prediction of lung cancer lymph node metastases using convolutional neural networks developed from automatically extracted images of endobronchial ultrasound videos without supervision of the lymph node location.

The management of early stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) presents significant challenges. While radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has shown safety and effectiveness in treating HCC, with lower mortality rates and shorter hospital stays, its high recurrence rate remains a significant impediment. Consequently, achieving improved survival solely through RFA is challenging, particularly in retrospective studies with inherent biases.

M-fiducial phantom based fast automatic ultrasound calibration technique: A novel approach for 2D to 3D image registration.

Department of Biomedical Engineering, Center for Biomedical and Robotics Technology (BART LAB), Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University, Salaya, Thailand.

This study introduces a novel M-fiducial phantom-based automatic ultrasound (US) calibration technique aimed at improving 2D to 3D image registration in ultrasound-guided procedures. The technique addresses limitations in existing methods by enhancing feature extraction capabilities and improving calibration accuracy. The proposed method utilizes an M-fiducial phantom, an extended version of the standard N-fiducial phantom, designed to facilitate automatic extraction with a linear probe, particularly in small field-of-view scenarios.

U-Net and Its Variants Based Automatic Tracking of Radial Artery in Ultrasonic Short-Axis Views: A Pilot Study.

Diagnostics (Basel)

October 2024

Department of Biomedical Engineering, College of Chemistry and Life Science, Beijing University of Technology, Beijing 100124, China.

Radial artery tracking (RAT) in the short-axis view is a pivotal step for ultrasound-guided radial artery catheterization (RAC), which is widely employed in various clinical settings. To eliminate disparities and lay the foundations for automated procedures, a pilot study was conducted to explore the feasibility of U-Net and its variants in automatic RAT. Approved by the institutional ethics committee, patients as potential RAC candidates were enrolled, and the radial arteries were continuously scanned by B-mode ultrasonography.

Article Synopsis
  • - Hemorrhage is the main cause of preventable death in trauma situations, leading to military and civilian advancements in medical practices, particularly through the use of tourniquets to manage extremity bleeding and save lives.
  • - While tourniquets have significantly decreased deaths from bleeding in military settings, noncompressible hemorrhage still poses a major risk, especially before patients receive definitive medical care.
  • - The study explores using a small, disposable pressure monitor during resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) to enhance blood pressure monitoring, facilitate better resuscitation practices, and reduce the need for blood products in extreme environments.
