In April and May 1979, an unusual anthrax epidemic occurred in Sverdlovsk, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Soviet officials attributed it to consumption of contaminated meat. U.S. agencies attributed it to inhalation of spores accidentally released at a military microbiology facility in the city. Epidemiological data show that most victims worked or lived in a narrow zone extending from the military facility to the southern city limit. Farther south, livestock died of anthrax along the zone's extended axis. The zone paralleled the northerly wind that prevailed shortly before the outbreak. It is concluded that the escape of an aerosol of anthrax pathogen at the military facility caused the outbreak.

Objective: Evaluate Department of Defense (DoD) antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) by assessing the relationship between key clinical outcome metrics (antibiotic use, incidence of resistant pathogens, and incidence of infections) and CDC Core Element (CE) adherence.
Design: Retrospective, cross-sectional study of DoD hospitals in 2018 and 2021.
Methods: National Healthcare Safety Network Standardized Antimicrobial Administration Ratios (SAARs) were used to measure antibiotic use and microbiology results to evaluate four types of pathogen incidence.

Objective: Surgical site infections (SSIs) were recognized to be the most common complication of neurological surgery, with substantial life quality threats to patients and additional cost burdens to healthcare facilities. This study sought to expound the infection characteristics of class I incision and provide clinical indication for the prevention and treatment of SSIs.
Methods: A 2-year retrospective analysis was conducted according to patients who performed neurological surgery with class I incision in a tertiary comprehensive hospital in Shaanxi Province, China.

The Norwegian government has maintained a plan of action on nuclear safety and security for over 25 years. The need for such a plan grew from extensive nuclear activities during the Cold War, both civil and military, that led eventually to significant amounts of radioactive waste and nuclear material being stored in unsafe conditions in northwest Russia. As part of the program to implement the plan of action, the Norwegian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority has maintained a program of bilateral regulatory cooperation with corresponding authorities in countries of the former Soviet Union for over 25 years.

To address the underreporting of mpox cases in endemic regions, a regional surveillance network, known as the Mpox Threat Reduction Network (MPX-TRN), was established between five neighboring countries in Central and West Africa in 2022. One direct outcome of the MPX-TRN has been the strengthening of regional mpox surveillance. This consortium has facilited open communication channels, detection of cross-border mpox cases, and improvements of the detection and diagnosis of mpox in Central Africa and worldwide.

This scoping review evaluated the efficacy/effectiveness and utilization of complementary and integrative health (CIH) therapies for pain management within the Military Health System (MHS). Specifically, it aimed to assess evidence-based modalities such as acupuncture, biofeedback, hypnosis, massage therapy, meditation, guided imagery, Tai Chi/Qi Gong, and yoga, which are part of the Veterans Administration's (VA) Whole Health program. The goal was to determine their effectiveness in military service members and understand their utilization in the MHS, as well as explore CIH research in the MHS to identify gaps.
