Quantifying microbiome species and composition from metagenomic assays is often challenging due to its time-consuming nature and computational complexity. In Bioinformatics, k-mer-based approaches were long established to expedite the analysis of large sequencing data and are now widely used to annotate metagenomic data. We make use of k-mer counting techniques for efficient and accurate compositional analysis of microbiota from whole metagenome sequencing.

Background: The lack of harmonization of evaluation criteria by Ethics Committees in the European Union (EU) has led to inconsistent ethics reviews received by research sites participating in multicenter non-interventional studies. The European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) appears to be implemented at national level with a substantial degree of variance in interpretation. The European Reference Networks (ERNs) were struggling in setting an Informed Consent Form (ICF) for registries, allowing reuse of data for research purposes.

Objectives: The primary focus of this research is the proposition of a methodological framework for the clinical application of the long COVID symptoms and severity score (LC-SSS). This tool is not just a self-reported assessment instrument developed and validated but serves as a standardized, quantifiable means to monitor the diverse and persistent symptoms frequently observed in individuals with long COVID.
Methods: A 3-stage process was used to develop, validate, and establish scoring standards for the LC-SSS.
