Robotic-assisted laparoscopic modified ureteroplasty using lingual mucosa grafts or appendiceal flaps for the management of complex ureteral strictures: a retrospective cohort study.

BMC Surg

October 2024

Department of Urology, General Hospital of Southern Theater Command, The First School of Clinical Medicine, Southern Medical University, Liuhua Road No. 111, Guangzhou, 510010, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to assess the safety and effectiveness of robot-assisted laparoscopic ureteroplasty using either a lingual mucosa graft (LMG) or an appendiceal flap (AF) in treating complex ureteral strictures in 16 patients.
  • - All surgeries were completed successfully without any needing to switch to open surgery, with an average operation time of about 210 minutes and a 100% success rate in addressing the strictures.
  • - The findings suggest that this robotic technique is both safe and effective, and the authors recommend it for wider use in similar surgical cases.

Robot-assisted repair of ureteral stricture.

J Robot Surg

September 2024

Department of Urology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University, Anhui Medical University, No. 218 Jixi Road, Hefei, 230022, Anhui, People's Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • Robot-assisted laparoscopic techniques have significantly improved the minimally invasive treatment of ureteral strictures, providing a range of surgical options.
  • These robotic methods offer better functional outcomes, fewer complications, and quicker recovery compared to traditional open surgery.
  • Further long-term studies are needed to confirm the positive results reported in current case series about robotic ureteral stricture correction.

Objective: To evaluate the viability of robot-assisted appendiceal ureteroplasty as an innovative surgical approach for the reconstruction of ureteral strictures in cases where traditional methods are unsuitable.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of 14 patients who underwent robot-assisted appendiceal ureteroplasty for right-sided ureteral stricture disease at three academic centers between March 2018 and November 2022. Patients were selected based on stricture characteristics, tissue quality, and the need for tissue transfer techniques.

Lumbar hernias are rare abdominal wall hernias that occur in the posterolateral abdominal wall. Intra-peritoneal or extra-peritoneal contents typically protrude through defects in one of two anatomical triangles. The superior lumbar triangle (Grynfeltt-Lesshaft triangle) is an inverted triangle bordered by the 12th rib superiorly, the internal oblique muscle laterally, and the erector spinae muscle medially.

Purpose: A robotic-assisted laparoscopic approach to appendicostomy offers the benefits of a minimally invasive approach to patients who would typically necessitate an open procedure, those with a larger body habitus, and those requiring combined complex colorectal and urologic reconstructive procedures. We present our experience performing robotic-assisted appendicostomies with a focus on patient selection, perioperative factors, and functional outcomes.

Methods: A retrospective review of patients who underwent a robotic-assisted appendicostomy/neoappendicostomy at our institution was performed.
