Temporal Range Dynamics of the Lataste's Viper ( Boscá, 1878) in Doñana (Spain): Insights into Anthropogenically Driven Factors.

Animals (Basel)

October 2024

Doñana (southern Spain), a region of notable biodiversity richness, is highly threatened by ongoing landscape transformation and climate change. We investigated the local effect of these anthropogenic factors on the temporal range dynamics of Lataste's viper (), an Iberian endemic Mediterranean reptile that has apparently become rare over the years in Doñana. Using ecological niche-based models, based on climatic and remote sensing variables, we analyzed historical (1959-1999) and contemporary (2000-2022) records of the species to assess range shifts and identify environmental factors that may influence them.

Article Synopsis
  • * Conducted over eight years (2015-2023) using data from a French MS registry, researchers categorized relapses based on MRI results to better understand their impact.
  • * Findings indicate that certain factors, like treatment type and fatigue, increase the likelihood of clinically defined relapses without MRI evidence, suggesting a need for revised monitoring and treatment strategies for MS patients.

Trends in Mortality in People With HIV From 1999 through 2020: A Multicohort Collaboration.

Clin Infect Dis

November 2024

Centre of Excellence for Health, Immunity and Infections (CHIP), Rigshospitalet, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Article Synopsis
  • Mortality rates among people with HIV significantly dropped after the introduction of combination antiretroviral therapy, particularly between 1999 and 2009, but remained stable from 2010 to 2020.
  • The study analyzed data from over 55,000 participants, revealing that AIDS-related deaths were most common in the earlier period, while deaths from non-AIDS-related malignancies increased in the later years.
  • Despite the decline in overall mortality, the reduction was not entirely attributed to better immune function or the presence of other risk factors, suggesting other contributing elements may be at play.

Introduction: Primary bone tumors encompass a range of rare and diverse lesions. Pathological diagnosis poses significant challenges, with histological discrepancies extensively studied in soft tissue sarcomas but lacking specific investigation in bone lesions. This study aimed to determine the rate of major diagnostic discrepancies in primary bone tumors, assessing whether initial histological analysis within an expert referral center network reduces this rate and final diagnostic delay.
