During the 17 years period from 1967 to 1983 a total number of 1322 children were hospitalized for infectious croup (stenosing laryngotracheitis) at the Children's Hospital in Bochum. The epidemiology of this disease, especially the yearly and seasonal incidence as well as clinical symptoms were analyzed. For this purpose at least 18 data were obtained from each patient and processed by computer using an especially elaborated FORTRAN IV program.

Congenital anomalies of the larynx are reviewed from a clinical and therapeutic point of view by means of data from the literature and our own case studies. Laryngeal aplasia is not compatible with life, whereas atresia may have a theoretical chance to survive. Among the stenotic anomalies causing congenital stridor the harmless laryngomalacia is the most frequent.

Three consecutive studies were concerned with clinical, pathophysiologic, and immunologic aspects of recurrent croup. The first investigation demonstrated that recurrent croup is a distinct disease entity which shares many clinical features with asthma and should be distinguished from viral laryngotracheobronchitis. In the second study a high incidence of airway hyperreactivity was found in children with recurrent croup.
