During cardiopulmonary bypass, thrombin is generated, which is thought to be initiated by activation of factor XII on the surface of the bypass equipment. We present a patient with severe factor XII deficiency who underwent cardiac surgery. As much thrombin was formed during cardiopulmonary bypass (measured by the prothrombin activation fragment F1 + 2 and thrombin-antithrombin complexes) as in normal patients, showing that factor XII was not necessary for thrombin generation. Factor X, but not factor IX, was activated (as measured by their activation peptides), and this activation correlated with F1 + 2 and thrombin-antithrombin complexes, suggesting that the tissue-factor/factor-VIIa pathway is the trigger for thrombin formation.

The plaques associated with Alzheimer's disease are formed as a result of the aggregation of Aβ peptides, which vary in length from 38 to 43 amino acids. The 1-40 peptide is the most abundant, while the 1-42 peptide appears to be the most destructive to neurons and/or glial cells in a variety of assays. We have demonstrated that aggregated Aβ, a state prior to plaque formation, will activate the plasma bradykinin-forming pathway when tested in vitro.

Background: Rare bleeding disorders (RBDs) include fibrinogen (Factor I), prothrombin (Factor II), Factor V(FV), combined Factor V and Factor VIII, Factor VII, Factor X, Factor XI, Factor XII, and Factor XIII deficiencies. This group accounts for 3-5% of all factor deficiencies. Different symptoms may occur, ranging from mild or moderate bleeding to serious and life-threatening bleeding, which may not be related to the factor level.

This study examined the pathophysiological effects of venoms from neonate and adult specimens of the viperid snake , focusing on their ability to activate various blood clotting factors in human plasma. All venoms exhibited strong procoagulant properties. In concentration-response tests, the clotting potency of the neonate venoms fell within the range of their parents' maximum clotting velocities and areas under the curve.
