We have previously observed small virus-like particles in the brain of hamsters with experimental scrapie. Here we report that small virus-like structures can be isolated from brains of patients with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and identified by electronmicroscopy.

Nucleus pulposus cell (NPC) senescence contributes to intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD). However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are not fully understood. In this study, it is demonstrated that angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) counteracted the aging of NPCs and IVDD at the cellular and physiological levels.

Structural variants of the synthetic opioid fentanyl are a major threat to public health. Following an investigation showing that many derivatives are poorly detected by commercial lateral flow and related assays, we created hapten conjugate vaccines using an immunogenic virus-like particle carrier and eight synthetic fentanyl derivatives designed to mimic the structural features of several of the more dangerous analogues. Immunization of mice elicited strong antihapten humoral responses, allowing the screening of hundreds of hapten-specific hybridomas for binding strength and specificity.

Charge detection mass spectrometry (CD-MS) is used to monitor the dissociation of large (300 kDa to 20 MDa) protein complexes in droplets heated with a 10.6 μm CO laser. In this approach, electrospray ionization (ESI) is used to produce charged droplets containing macromolecular complexes.

Zymocin-like killer toxins are anticodon nucleases secreted by some budding yeast species, which kill competitor yeasts by cleaving tRNA molecules. They are encoded by virus-like elements (VLEs), cytosolic linear DNA molecules that are also called killer plasmids. To date, toxins of this type have been found only in budding yeast species (Saccharomycotina).
