Methamphetamine has long been a drug of abuse. Recently, a resurgence of its use has spread across the country. A smokable form of methamphetamine hydrochloride with the street name "ice" has spread eastward from Hawaii and California. It has strong stimulant properties, is twice as toxic as amphetamine, is associated with multiple system effects similar to cocaine. Treatment of acute intoxication is symptomatic and may include hydration, temperature regulation, seizure management, control of agitation, and monitoring for cardiac arrhythmias. Long-term treatment of addiction requires drug rehabilitation and inpatient counseling.

Final results for the primary endpoint of the COVID-19 Monoclonal antibody Efficacy Trial-Intent to Care Early (COMET-ICE) randomized controlled trial (NCT04545060) showed a 79% ( < 0.001) adjusted relative risk reduction in longer-than-24-hour hospitalization or death due to any cause in high-risk patients with COVID-19 receiving sotrovimab compared with placebo at Day 29. Given the substantial costs associated with COVID-19 hospitalizations, there is a need to quantify the economic impact of clinical trial outcomes to inform decisionmaking.

This review analyzes contemporary literature in the context of Australian aging methamphetamine users, service response, and challenges to provision of care to this population. The article focuses on Australian literature with comparisons made with trends arising from international scholarship. Searches of the CINAHL, ProQuest, and Scopus electronic journal databases were performed in early 2014 as part of a wider study investigating dual diagnosis in older adults.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia imposing substantial morbidity and mortality. Catheter-based pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) using radiofrequency current (RFC) has become a standard treatment for drug-resistant and symptomatic paroxysmal AF (PAF). In recent years, the cryoballoon-based technique is increasingly used as a promising alternative with a short learning curve.

Impaired signaling by granulocyte/macrophage-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) drives the pathogenesis of two diseases (autoimmune and hereditary pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP)) representing over ninety percent of patients who develop PAP syndrome but not a broad spectrum of diseases that cause PAP by other mechanisms. We previously exploited the ability of GM-CSF to rapidly increase cell-surface CD11b levels on neutrophils (CD11bSurface) to establish the CD11b stimulation index (CD11b-SI), a test enabling the clinical research diagnosis of impaired GM-CSF signaling based on measuring CD11bSurface by flow cytometry using fresh, heparinized blood. (CD11b-SI is defined as GM-CSF-stimulated- CD11bSurface minus unstimulated CD11bSurface divided by un-stimulated CD11bSurface multiplied by 100.
