Background: Lipid vesicles, especially those utilizing biocompatible materials like chitosan (CHIT), hold significant promise for enhancing the stability and release characteristics of drugs such as indomethacin (IND), effectively overcoming the drawbacks associated with conventional drug formulations.

Objectives: This study seeks to develop and characterize novel lipid vesicles composed of phosphatidylcholine and CHIT that encapsulate indomethacin (IND-ves), as well as to evaluate their in vitro hemocompatibility.

Methods: The systems encapsulating IND were prepared using a molecular droplet self-assembly technique, involving the dissolution of lipids, cholesterol, and indomethacin in ethanol, followed by sonication and the gradual incorporation of a CHIT solution to form stable vesicular structures.

Carnivory in plants is an unusual trait that has arisen multiple times, independently, throughout evolutionary history. Plants in the genus are carnivorous and feed on microorganisms that live in soil using modified subterranean leaf structures (rhizophylls). A surprisingly broad array of microfauna has been observed in the plants' digestive chambers, including ciliates, amoebae, and soil mites.

Effects of cell shape and nucleus shape on epithelial-mesenchymal transition revealed using chimeric micropatterns.

Biomaterials

Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a key phenotypic switch in cancer metastasis, leading to fatal consequences for patients. Under geometric constraints, the morphology of cancer cells changes in both cellular and subcellular levels, whose effects on EMT are, however, not fully understood. Herein, we designed and fabricated chimeric micropatterns of polystyrene (PS) with adhesion contrast to reveal the impacts of cell shapes and nuclear shapes on EMT in a decoupled way.

Shifting CH/CO Adsorption and Separation in Pillar-Layered Metal-Organic Frameworks Finely-Regulated by Molecular Rotation.

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Macromolecular Science of Shaanxi Province, School of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering, Shaanxi Normal University, Xi'an, 710062, China.

The efficient separation of C₂H₂/CO₂ mixture is crucial for industrial applications.  A promising strategy is proposed herein to fine-tune the C₂H₂/CO adsorption and separation by pillar-layered metal-organic framework (MOF) adsorbents via molecular rotation. Keeping the same ultramicroporous architecture, three Zn-X-TRZ (TRZ = 1,2,4-triazole) adsorbents are prepared with X-pillar rotors varying from 9,10-anthracenedicarboxylic acid (ADC), 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (NDC) to 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (BDC).

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Molecular Engineering of Polymers, Collaborative Innovation Center of Polymers and Polymer Composite Materials, Department of Macromolecular Science, Fudan University, Shanghai, 200433, P. R. China.

Deformation of metal halide perovskite can induce many interesting properties. This study focuses on a manganese-based organic-inorganic perovskite with a unique structure in which tetrahedral and octahedral coordination coexist in single crystal unit cell. This perovskite emits at 519 and 615 nm at room temperature.
