Dairy cows are susceptible to several health disorders throughout their lactation. Objectives were to characterize an in vitro model to study bioenergetic measures in CD4 T lymphocytes in dairy cows. Twenty-four healthy mid-lactation multiparous Holstein dairy cows were enrolled at a mean (±SD) of 234 ± 22 DIM.

The hypoxia response pathway enables adaptation to oxygen deprivation. It is mediated by hypoxia-inducible factors (HIF), which promote metabolic reprogramming, erythropoiesis, angiogenesis and tissue remodeling. This led to the successful development of HIF-inducing drugs for treating anemia and some of these molecules are now in clinic.

Mitochondrial functions are critical for the ability of the fungal pathogen to cause disease. However, mechanistic connections between key functions such as the mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) and virulence factor elaboration have yet to be thoroughly characterized. Here, we observed that inhibition of ETC complex III suppressed melanin formation, a major virulence factor.

However, a significant proportion of its biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) remain silent under typical laboratory conditions.
