A defective hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis has been associated with susceptibility to arthritis in rats and with rheumatoid arthritis in humans. The effect of corticosteroid supplementation in early RA has not been tested previously. We undertook a double-blind placebo-controlled study of sulphasalazine plus either corticosteroid or placebo. No early benefit was demonstrated as 7 of 11 of the corticosteroid supplemented group had withdrawn by 1 year. The addition of corticosteroids to sulphasalazine in patients with early disease did not appear to offer any benefit.

Background: Few studies have examined the use of self-screening tools and patient alert cards (PAC) for screening adverse drug reactions (ADRs).

Aim: To evaluate the benefits of self-screening tools and PAC for screening ADRs.

Method: A prospective study of outpatients was conducted at a tertiary care teaching hospital.

Introduction: This case study presents a rare and fatal instance of Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) and Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) syndrome in a 51-year-old male patient diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).

Case Presentation: The patient was initially treated with sulfasalazine, leflunomide, and hydroxychloroquine, following which he developed a rash, fever, and loose stools. Drug allergy was suspected, and the antirheumatic medications were withdrawn, following which, the patient improved.

Introduction: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disorder that primarily affects the spine and sacroiliac joints, leading to pain, stiffness, and progressive thoracolumbar kyphotic deformity. A key complication in advanced AS is the development of Andersson lesions (AL), degenerative vertebral lesions resulting from the disease's progression. These lesions can cause significant mechanical pain, often mistaken for the chronic discomfort associated with AS.

Serum CS/DS, IGF-1, and IGFBP-3 as Biomarkers of Cartilage Remodeling in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Implications.

Cartilage destruction in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is diagnosed, often too late, on basis of clinical evaluation and radiographic imaging. This case-control study investigated serum chondroitin/dermatan sulfate (CS/DS) as a potential biochemical marker of cartilage metabolism, aiming to improve early diagnosis and precision treatment for JIA. We also measured the levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) (using ELISA methods) in JIA patients ( = 55) both before and after treatment (prednisone, sulfasalazine, methotrexate, administered together), and analyzed their relationships with CS/DS levels.
