The innervation of the bovine tubouterine junction was studied in sexually mature heifers using antisera against various neuronal markers and a modified acetylcholinesterase method. The vast majority of the nerve fibres in the bovine tubouterine junction belongs to the sympathetic nervous system; peptidergic and cholinergic fibers are restricted to characteristic locations. The endosalpinx in the adovarian portion of the terminal tubal segment is poorly innervated. The mucosa of the aduterine portion and of the tubouterine transitional region proper receives a strikingly dense innervation, which is observed mainly in combination with a strong vascularisation of specialised mucosal structures. In the endometrium, perivascular nerves accompany the ascending spiral arteries but sporadic contacts between nerve fibres and uterine glands are also observed. From the muscular coat the inner longitudinal layer of the terminal tubal segment is more richly supplied by nerve fibres than the intermediate circular and outer longitudinal layers of the tubouterine junction. No changes in the innervation pattern were seen during the different stages of the sexual cycle.

Purpose: Classically, the round ligament of the uterus (RLU) attaches distally in the ipsilateral labia majora. This attachment has rarely been described in adults. That is why we have performed an anatomical study focused on this distal ending.

Three-dimensional architecture of the myosalpinx in the mare as revealed by scanning electron microscopy.

Department of Morphology, Biochemistry, Physiology, and Animal Productions, Morphology Section, Veterinary Faculty, University of Messina, Messina, Italy.

The three-dimensional architecture of the myosalpinx in the mare was investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after removal of interstitial connective tissue with NaOH digestion. In the extramural portion of the tubo-uterine junction (TUJ), isthmus, and ampulla, the myosalpinx architecture is represented by a unique muscular structure which runs from the mesosalpinx to the base of the inner mucous folds. This unique muscular structure consists mainly of bundles of muscular fibers independent of one another, which show a multiple spatial arrangement and form a complex network.

A new morpho-functional classification of the Fallopian tube based on its three-dimensional myoarchitecture.

January 2001

Institute of Veterinary Anatomy 1, University of Messina, Italy.

The recent direct observations, under scanning electron microscopy (SEM), of the three-dimensional architecture of myosalpinx in different mammals allows us classify salpinxes according to the myoarchitecture of their tubo-uterine junction (TUJ) and isthmus segments. Based upon the myoarchitecture of the outer wall of the TUJ we could find barrier-like species (rat and sow), sphincter-like species type a (rabbit and ewe) and sphincter-like species type b (cow and woman). The different architecture of TUJ can be explained by the different nature of the mating process.

The oviducts of 31 cyclic cows were examined to study the structure and nature of the oviductal mucosa. The general distribution of spermatozoa within the oviductal mucosa was studied in five additional cows. The oviductal infundibulum is an asymmetric funnel-shaped structure surrounding the ostium.

Hormonal treatment of bilateral proximal tubal obstruction.

Int J Fertil Womens Med

October 1999

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, State University of New York, Health Science Center at Brooklyn, 11203, USA.

Objective: To see whether medical suppressive treatment might be considered in the treatment of a subgroup of patients. with proximal tubal obstruction (PTO), one of the major causes for infertility, often due to endometriosis of the tubouterine junction and therefore primarily treated by operative procedures.

Methods: 23 infertile patients with bilateral PTO were treated with hormonal suppression therapy with GnRH agonists, norethindrone acetate, or danazol for at least 3 months.
