1. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of selenium added cardioplegic solutions on postischemic myocardial recovery. 2. The hearts were mounted on Langendorf perfusion apparatus and perfused with Krebs-Henseleit solution. The hearts were arrested by one of the following cardioplegic solutions; (a) K+ 20 mmol/l (control group); (b) K+ 20 mmol/l+selenium 10(-3) mol/l (experimental group). After 20 min of normothermic ischemia the hearts were reperfused by the same buffer. 3. Postischemic percentage changes of heart rate, contractile force and heart work were compared between the groups. 4. Addition of selenium to the cardioplegic solution significantly decreased the postischemic myocardial injury.

Selenium is an essential nutritional element to mammalians necessary for the active function of different oxidant enzymes, as glutathione peroxidase (GPx), thioredoxin reductases (TrxR), and iodothyronine deiodinases (IDD). The anti-oxidative effect of selenium is pivotal for the human physiology. Oxidative stress is associated with various diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus or cancer, and is also associated with the majority of surgical procedures.

Two different types of therapy with magnesium are used: physiological oral magnesium supplementation which is totally atoxic since it palliates magnesium deficiencies by simply normalizing the magnesium intake and pharmacological magnesium therapy which may induce toxicity since it creates iatrogenic magnesium overload. Primary and secondary magnesium deficiencies constitute the sole indication of physiological oral magnesium therapy. It is therefore necessary to be well acquainted with the clinical and paraclinical pattern of magnesium deficit and to discriminate between magnesium deficiency due to an insufficient magnesium intake which only requires oral physiological supplementation and magnesium depletion related to a dysregulation of the control mechanisms of magnesium status which requires more or less specific regulation of its causal dysregulation.

A trace element selenium (Se) is an integral component of glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx) which is one of the important free radical scavenger. We previously reported that serum Se level and serum and myocardial GSHPx activities were significantly lower in infant rats than adult ones.
