  • It highlights the need for developing health care plans, training, and ongoing support to ensure smooth transitions for these children, especially in rural areas where resources may be limited.

Article Abstract

With the increasing number of medically fragile and technology-dependent children in schools, greater collaboration is required between health care professionals and public school personnel to ensure that safe and effective services are provided. This article describes a comprehensive process involving two different, though interrelated, teams on which the pediatric nurse plays a critical role. The process involves collaborative multidisciplinary medical-health team activities, referral to the educational system before discharge from the hospital setting, collaborative multidisciplinary medical-health-educational team activities, and development of a health care plan, training, and follow-up that facilitates a safe, successful transition from the medical-rehabilitation setting into the community educational environment. Implications for states are provided, with special emphasis on rural communities.

Application of Laparoscopic Partial Splenectomy with Total Blood Flow Occlusion in Benign Splenic Lesions.

J Vis Exp

December 2024

Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic-Spleen Surgery, Shunde Hospital of Southern Medical University, First People's Hospital of Shunde;

Laparoscopic partial splenectomy (LPS) is gradually becoming the preferred method for treating benign splenic lesions. However, due to the abundant blood supply and its soft, fragile tissue texture, especially when the lesion is located near the splenic hilum or is particularly large, performing partial splenectomy (PS) in clinical practice is extremely challenging. Therefore, we have been continuously exploring and optimizing hemorrhage control methods during PS, and we here propose a method to perform LPS with complete spleen blood flow occlusion.

NUFIP1 integrates amino acid sensing and DNA damage response to maintain the intestinal homeostasis.

Nutrient availability strongly affects intestinal homeostasis. Here, we report that low-protein (LP) diets decrease amino acids levels, impair the DNA damage response (DDR), cause DNA damage and exacerbate inflammation in intestinal tissues of male mice with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Intriguingly, loss of nuclear fragile X mental retardation-interacting protein 1 (NUFIP1) contributes to the amino acid deficiency-induced impairment of the DDR in vivo and in vitro and induces necroptosis-related spontaneous enteritis.

Fragile X autosomal homolog 1 (FXR1), a member of the fragile X messenger riboprotein 1 family, has been linked to psychiatric disorders including autism and schizophrenia. Parvalbumin (PV) interneurons play critical roles in cortical processing, and have been implicated in FXR1-linked mental illnesses. Targeted deletion of FXR1 from PV interneurons in mice has been shown to alter cortical excitability and elicit schizophrenia-like behavior.

Article Synopsis
  • The Vitamin D Antenatal Asthma Reduction Trial (VDAART) studied children from 6 months to 8 years and found links between specific gene variants and children's body mass index.
  • These associations also connected microbiome characteristics tied to obesity with important lipids and amino acids.
  • The findings suggest that genetic factors play a role in influencing the microbiome during development and highlight potential biomarkers for childhood obesity and related health issues like insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

Objective: High triglyceride (TG) levels are important risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Some recent studies have shown that snoring is also closely related to elevated TG levels. The specific pathogenesis of elevated TG levels in snoring patients is still unclear.
