This article describes the current capabilities and future potential of robots designed as supplements or replacements for human assistants or as tools for education and rehabilitation. A number of researchers have developed and tested a variety of robot assistants for individuals with disabilities. These robots can usually be classified as educational, vocational or independent-living assistants. Robots in all three categories are reviewed. A brief summary of the critical characteristics of human service robots is also presented and the limitations of current technology are discussed. Finally, current research aimed at addressing these limitations is described. White robots of all kinds have proven much more difficult to develop than people had expected, we conclude that it will eventually be possible to create an effective, reliable robot for human service tasks, but not as quickly as was predicted in the early 1980s.

Dust emissions from open-pit mining pose a significant threat to environmental safety and human health. Currently, the range of dust suppressants used in coal mining is limited, often failing to account for their suitability across various stockpiles. This oversight results in poor infiltration after application, leading to insufficient crust formation and reduced durability.

Introduction: In current and anticipated future conflicts, including large-scale combat operations, medical teams are tasked to provide prolonged casualty care (PCC) or extended patient care that occurs when delays in evacuation exceed the team's capabilities. Although the principles of PCC are often taught to military medical providers using simulation, educators rarely dedicate the time to training required to simulate the prolonged nature of these encounters. Therefore, a lack of knowledge exists regarding which aspects of extended care may be lost in an accelerated training scenario.

Background: Our previous research demonstrated that growth differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) exhibited superior predictive capability for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) development with an AUC of 0.86 at 10 years before disease diagnosis. However, the specific pathways and molecular mechanisms associated with GDF15 expression during MASH development remain to be fully investigated in humans.

We present the design and commissioning of a cryogenic low-vibration test facility that measures displacement noise from a gram-scale silicon cantilever at the level of 10-16m/Hz at 1 kHz. This sensitivity is necessary for future tests of thermal noise models on cross sections of silicon suspension samples proposed for future gravitational-wave detectors. A volume of ∼36 l is enclosed by radiation shields cooling an optical test cavity that is suspended from a multi-stage pendulum chain providing isolation from acoustic and environmental noise.
