Self-injection with olive oil. A cause of lipoid pneumonia. | LitMetric

A 48-year-old man with unipolar depression and a psychosexual problem concerning his body image was injecting his scrotum repeatedly with olive oil to increase the size of his genitals. He developed respiratory failure following accidental intravenous injection of olive oil and was found to have lipogranulomatous lesions in the lung and the scrotum.

Olive mill wastewater (OMW), a by-product of olive oil production, poses significant environmental risks due to its acidity and high polyphenol content, particularly in water-scarce regions like Jordan. This study developed a cost-effective approach to reduce the phenolic content in OMW using modified granular-activated carbon (GAC). Commercial GAC, chosen for its high surface area and adsorption capacity, was modified via oxidative treatment with concentrated nitric acid and reductive treatment using 10 wt.

Industrial Symbiosis (InSym) capitalises on the proximity of entities to gain a competitive advantage through collective strategies. Within the Circular Economy, this involves the circular exchange and reuse of water, energy, and resources among participating businesses, enhancing resource valorisation in manufacturing. However, as a distinct business model, InSym requires collaboration among multiple stakeholders working toward a shared goal, posing challenges in achieving mutually beneficial outcomes.

In recent decades, an increasing body of research has highlighted significant scientific evidence linking adherence to the Mediterranean diet with a reduced risk of chronic diseases. Simultaneously, concerns about the environmental impact of the food system have intensified, particularly considering projected population growth in the coming years. This work introduces a new graphical representation of the traditional Mediterranean dietary model, developed by a dedicated Working Group of the Italian Society of Human Nutrition (SINU).

This study explores the use of front-face fluorescence spectroscopy to detect extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) adulteration with lower-grade olive oils (virgin, ordinary virgin, lampante virgin, refined, and pomace) at 5-50 % adulteration levels. Emission spectra were analyzed using principal component analysis, factorial discriminant analysis, and partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) at excitation wavelengths of 270, 290, and 430 nm. PLS-DA at 430 nm provided the best results, achieving 100 % classification accuracy and perfectly separating 12 groups of pure and adulterated samples.
