Electrolysis of impure water (such as seawater) has recently garnered research interest as it may enable hydrogen production at reduced costs. However, the tendency of impurity ions and other species to degrade electrocatalysts and membranes within an electrolyzer is a serious challenge. Here, we investigate the effects of copper impurities of varying concentrations on the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) using platinum electrocatalysts.

The self-assembled ferritin protein nanocage plays a pivotal role during oxidative stress, iron metabolism, and host-pathogen interaction by executing rapid iron uptake, oxidation and its safe-storage. Self-assembly creates a nanocompartment and various pores/channels for the uptake of charged substrates (Fe) and develops a concentration gradient across the protein shell. This phenomenon fuels rapid ferroxidase activity by an upsurge in the substrate concentration at the catalytic sites.

A Single-Chain-in-Mean-Field (SCMF) algorithm was introduced to study block copolymer electrolytes in nonequilibrium conditions. This method self-consistently combines a particle-based description of the polymer with a generalized diffusion equation for the ionic fluxes, thus exploiting the time scale separation between fast ion motion and the slow polymer relaxation and self-assembly. We apply this computational method to study ion fluxes in electrochemical cells containing poly(ethylene oxide)-polystyrene (PEO-PS) block copolymers with added lithium salt.

ConspectusZinc metal batteries (ZMBs) appear to be promising candidates to replace lithium-ion batteries owing to their higher safety and lower cost. Moreover, natural reserves of Zn are abundant, being approximately 300 times greater than those of Li. However, there are some typical issues impeding the wide application of ZMBs.
