The activity of Na,K-ATPase and Ca-ATPase of the intact erythrocytes and their membrane preparations and also fatty acid, phospholipid and protein content of erythrocyte membrane of guinea pig, mouse, rabbit and hamster have been examined. The activity of Na,K- and Ca-ATPase in intact erythrocytes varies significantly among different species while the level of activity of these enzymes in their membrane preparations differs slightly. Together with the results of investigations of chemical composition of the erythrocyte membrane of these species which show the principal homogeneity of their fatty acid, phospholipid and protein composition, these data indicate the existence of the system of intracellular modulators, that maintain the activity of these enzymes on the species specific level.

Transient plasma membrane disruption induced calcium waves in mouse and human corneal epithelial cells.

PLoS One

April 2024

Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy, Medical College of Georgia, Augusta University, Augusta, GA, United States of America.

The purpose of this study was to examine transient plasma membrane disruptions (TPMDs) and TPMD-induced Ca++ waves (TPMD Ca++ Wvs) in human and mouse corneal epithelium (HCEC and MCEC). A multi-photon microscope was used to create laser-induced TPMDs in single cultured cells and in intact ex vivo and in vivo MCECs and ex vivo human cornea rim HCECs. Eye rubbing-induced TPMDs were studied by gentle rubbing with a cotton tipped applicator over a closed eyelid in ex vivo and in vivo MCECs.

HAX-1 regulates SERCA2a oxidation and degradation.

J Mol Cell Cardiol

January 2018

Department of Pharmacology and Systems Physiology, University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine, Cincinnati, OH, USA; Molecular Biology Division, Biomedical Research Foundation, Academy of Athens, Athens, Greece. Electronic address:

Ischemia/reperfusion injury is associated with contractile dysfunction and increased cardiomyocyte death. Overexpression of the hematopoietic lineage substrate-1-associated protein X-1 (HAX-1) has been shown to protect from cellular injury but the function of endogenous HAX-1 remains obscure due to early lethality of the knockout mouse. Herein we generated a cardiac-specific and inducible HAX-1 deficient model, which uncovered an unexpected role of HAX-1 in regulation of sarco/endoplasmic reticulum Ca-ATPase (SERCA2a) in ischemia/reperfusion injury.

In the proximal tubule, axial flow (drag on brush-border microvilli) stimulates Na(+) and HCO3 (-) reabsorption by modulating both Na/H exchanger 3 (NHE3) and H-ATPase activity, a process critical to glomerulotubular balance. We have also demonstrated that blocking the angiotensin II receptor decreases baseline transport, but preserves the flow effect; dopamine leaves baseline fluxes intact, but abrogates the flow effect. In the current work, we provide evidence implicating cytosolic calcium in flow-dependent transport.

Ca-ATPase activity of human red cell ghosts: preeclampsia, lipid peroxidation and MgSO4.

Hypertens Pregnancy

August 2009

Laboratorio de Bioenergética Celular, Centro de Biofísica y Bioquímica, Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Científicas (IVIC), Caracas, Venezuela.

The increased level of lipid peroxidation of red blood cells during preeclampsia is considered to be responsible for the diminished Ca-ATPase activity in these cells. The level of lipid peroxidation and the Ca-ATPase activity of red blood cells from preeclamptic women, return to their normal values after in vivo and in vitro treatment with MgSO4 for 24 h. In order to evaluate whether or not cell intactness is essential for these changes, we used either intact red blood cells or red cell ghosts from normotensive pregnant women.

Background: Painful nerve injury leads to disrupted Ca signaling in primary sensory neurons, including decreased endoplasmic reticulum (ER) Ca storage. This study examines potential causes and functional consequences of Ca store limitation after injury.

Methods: Neurons were dissociated from axotomized fifth lumbar (L5) and the adjacent L4 dorsal root ganglia after L5 spinal nerve ligation that produced hyperalgesia, and they were compared to neurons from control animals.
