Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with accelerated vascular calcification and increased central systolic blood pressure when measured invasively (invCSBP) relative to cuff-based brachial systolic blood pressure (cuffSBP). The contribution of aortic wall calcification to this phenomenon has not been clarified. We, therefore, examined the effects of aortic calcification on cuffSBP and invCSBP in a cohort of patients representing all stages of CKD.

Immunohistochemical study of CD31 and α-SMA expression for age estimation of porcine skin wounds.

J Comp Pathol

October 2023

Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Frederiksberg, Denmark.

Age estimation of wounds in veterinary forensic investigations is based on the presence and amount of granulation tissue. However, accurate age assessment is challenging and new time-dependent markers are warranted to support and improve the current procedure. The objective of this study was to evaluate the expression of CD31-positive blood vessels and α-smooth muscle action (α-SMA)-positive myofibroblasts in granulation tissue in order to evaluate their value as markers for porcine wound age estimation in a veterinary forensic context.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effects of single-ring and double-ring annuloplasties on aortic regurgitation, highlighting that double-ring annuloplasty may provide better outcomes than single-ring.
  • Eighteen aortic roots from pigs were tested in a pulsatile model to assess hydrodynamics and structural measurements, revealing both methods significantly reduced aortic annulus size and improved coaptation height.
  • Results showed that the double-ring annuloplasty not only increased coaptation height more than the single-ring but also achieved a greater reduction in radial forces, suggesting it offers a more effective stabilization of the aortic structure.
