1. The evolution of the relations between the Portuguese universities and the State is presented. It is considered that over the last 30 years the most important policies were the creation of new universities and the legal recognition of Ph.D.s obtained abroad. These measures influenced engineering much more than medical schools. 2. Multiple mechanisms of assessment covering the quality of teaching in conformity with international standards, research and post-graduate activity should be established by medical schools themselves. It is also proposed that Medical Schools should embark on an ambitious post-graduate program so as to establish closer links with the medical profession. 3. It is considered that the assessment method under consideration by the Ministry of Education is dangerous, inadequate and unjustified. 4. It is considered that the present level of investment in tertiary education will cause our standards, in that area, to fall even more when compared with those of other European countries.

Genomic instability is the main cause of abnormal embryo development and abortion. NLRP7 dysfunctions affect embryonic development and lead to Hydatidiform Moles, but the underlying mechanisms remain largely elusive. Here, we show that NLRP7 knockout affects the genetic stability, resulting in increased DNA damage in both human embryonic stem cells and blastoids, making embryonic cells in blastoids more susceptible to apoptosis.

Purpose: Poor sleep is increasing worldwide but sleep studies, using objective measures, are limited in Africa. Thus, we described the actigraphy-measured sleep characteristics of Nigerian in-school adolescents and the differences in these sleep characteristics in rural versus urban-dwelling adolescents using actigraphy plus a sleep diary.
Methods: This comparative, quantitative study involved 170 adolescents aged 13-19 attending six rural and six urban schools in southwestern Nigeria.

Despite accumulating evidence that career development programming for women+ is critical for professional advancement and well-being, accessibility of these programs is generally limited to small cohorts, only offered to specific disciplines, or otherwise entirely unavailable. Opportunities for additional, targeted career development activities are imperative in developing and retaining women+ faculty.

Background: In 2024, the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare enforced a policy to increase the number of medical school students by 2,000 over the next 5 years, despite opposition from doctors. This study aims to predict the trend of excess or shortage of medical personnel in Korea due to the policy of increasing the number of medical school students by 2035.
Methods: Data from multiple sources, including the Ministry of Health and Welfare, National Health Insurance Corporation, and the Korean Medical Association, were used to estimate supply and demand.
