9-Methoxytariacuripyrone, a nitro-aromatic compound isolated from Aristolochia brevipes showed strong mutagenic activity in strain TA98, TA100 and some YG strains of Salmonella typhimurium with and without S9 mix. Incubation with cytosol resulted in a heavy increase in mutagenicity. When incubated with microsomes the activity was dramatically decreased. The results are discussed in view of the enzymes possibly involved in activation and detoxification of the compound. The role of the basic structure on the mutagenicity mediated through the nitro group was also considered.

Self-Similar Ligand for 2D Zr(IV)-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks: Fluorescent Sensing and Catalysis.

Inorg Chem

Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), Agency of Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), 2 Fusionopolis Way, Singapore 138634, Republic of Singapore.

Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework sheets, in comparison to the 3D analogues, offer potential advantages for intercalation of guest components between the layers, exfoliation/dispersion into solutions, and processing into thin films. As a versatile platform for leveraging organic functions, the 2D Zr(IV)-carboxylate net here features a dendritic Sierpinski tritopic linker with conjugated alkyne branches and a photoactive triphenylamine core. The 2D solid can be easily dispersed in water and many other solvents, resulting in stable and fluorescent suspension for sensing nitro aromatic compounds and Fe ions with high quenching efficiencies and ultralow limits of detection.

Article Synopsis
  • Biomass burning (BB) emits significant carbonaceous aerosols that irritate airways, with key markers like levoglucosan (LG) and the harmful nitro-aromatic compound 4-nitrocatechol (4NC) formed through atmospheric aging.
  • The study compares the toxic effects of 4NC and LG on human lung cells, revealing that 4NC is more potent and induces apoptosis more readily than LG, especially in specific lung cell lines.
  • Findings indicate that while both compounds lead to reactive oxygen species (ROS) imbalance and mitochondrial dysfunction, 4NC exposure poses higher risks for respiratory health due to its stronger toxicity at lower concentrations compared to LG.

Two Stable Pillar-Layered Zn-LMOFs for Highly Fluorescence Sensing of Inorganic Pollutants and Nitro Aromatic Compounds in Water.

Inorg Chem

October 2024

State Key Laboratory of Inorganic Synthesis and Preparative Chemistry, College of Chemistry, Jilin University, Changchun 130012, P. R. China.

Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) are a potential class of functional materials for the photoluminescent detection of a wide range of analytes as well as for the detection of pollutants in wastewater. Herein, by using the pillar-layered strategy, two new luminescence Zn-LMOFs ( and ) were successfully solvothermal synthesized. The 2D layers are both consisting of Zn and TPHC [TPHC = (1,1':2',1″-terphenyl)-3,3″,4,4',4″,5'-hexacarboxylic acid] ligands and then pillared by the different N-donor ligands to form the 3D Zn-LMOFs with topology.

Nitroreductases (NRs) are NAD(P)H-dependent flavoenzymes that reduce nitro aromatic compounds to their corresponding arylamines via the nitroso and hydroxylamine intermediates. Because of their broad substrate scope and versatility, NRs have found application in multiple fields such as biocatalysis, bioremediation, cell-imaging and prodrug activation. However, only a limited number of members of the broad NR superfamily (> 24 000 sequences) have been experimentally characterized.

The microbial agent technology has made significant progress in remediating nitro-aromatic compounds (NACs), such as -nitrophenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol, and 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene, in farmland soil over the past decade. However, there are still gaps in our understanding of the bioavailability and degradation mechanisms of these compounds in low-temperature environments. In this review, we provide a comprehensive summary of the strategies employed by cold-adapted microorganisms and elucidate the degradation pathways of NACs pollutants.
