Benzylisoquinolinium neuromuscular blocking agents can precipitate bronchospasm either through allergy/anaphylaxis or isolated stimulation of mast cell histamine release. This report presents a 75-year-old female who attended the day surgery unit for a rigid cystoscopy under general anaesthesia. She had a hyper-reactive airway history of mild historic asthma and sensitivity to aerosols.

Respiratory diseases in patients with bed bugs.

Clin Respir J

January 2022

Department of Emergency Medicine, Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, Florida, USA.

Introduction: Some arthropods such as cockroaches can exacerbate asthma, but it is unknown is this is true of bed bugs.

Objectives: The objective of this work is to determine if bronchospastic diseases like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) would be higher for ED patients who have bed bug infestation compared with patients who do not have bed bug infestation.

Methods: A case-control study was performed with 332 adult emergency department (ED) patients with bed bug infestation and 4952 without infestation.

Introduction: We developed evidence-based recommendations for prehospital evaluation and treatment of adult patients with respiratory distress. These recommendations are compared with current protocols used by the 33 local emergency medical services agencies (LEMSA) in California.

Methods: We performed a review of the evidence in the prehospital treatment of adult patients with respiratory distress.

Background: Cough is a common yet distressing symptom that results in significant health care costs from outpatient visits and related consultations.

Objective: The understanding of the pathobiology of cough in recent times has undergone an evolution with Cough hypersensitivity syndrome (CHS) being suggested in most cases of dry cough. However, in the case of productive cough, ancillary mechanisms including impaired Mucociliary clearance, in addition to hypermucosecretory bronchospastic conditions of Smoker's cough, asthma-COPD overlap, bronchiectasis, and allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, need to be critically addressed while optimizing patient care with symptomatic therapy in outpatient settings of India.

Lung mechanical properties distinguish children with asthma with normal and diminished lung function.

Clin Exp Allergy

April 2020

The Division of Allergy-Clinical Immunology, National Jewish Health Denver, CO, USA.

Background: Children with asthma, even those with severe persistent disease, can have forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV ) values ≥100% of predicted, while others have diminished FEV .

Objective: We sought to characterize the lung mechanical properties underlying these two asthma phenotypes and the mechanisms explaining the paradox of severe asthmatic children, whom when clinically stable can have an FEV >100% of predicted, but during an acute bronchospastic episode can experience a life-threatening asthma event.

Methods: Lung mechanics were evaluated in three groups of children: asthmatics with FEV ≥100% (HFEV ; n = 13), asthmatics with FEV ≤80% (LFEV ; n = 14) and non-asthmatic controls (n = 10).
