Pancreatitis is a common, sometimes fatal, disease of exocrine pancreas, initiated by damaged acinar cells. Recent studies implicate disordered macroautophagy/autophagy in pancreatitis pathogenesis. ATG8/LC3 protein is critical for autophagosome formation and a widely used marker of autophagic vacuoles.

Sake yeasts are ideally suited for sake making, producing higher levels of ethanol, proliferating at lower temperatures, and producing greater levels of various aromatic components and nutrients than laboratory yeasts. To elucidate the mechanism underlying S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) accumulation in sake yeast strains compared with that in laboratory yeast strains, we performed quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis and identified a significant QTL on chromosome VIII. Unlabelled: Staphylococcus epidermidis is an opportunistic pathogen that is an emerging risk factor in hospitals worldwide and is often difficult to eradicate as virulent strains produce a protective biofilm matrix. We utilized cell shaving proteomics to profile surface-exposed proteins from two fully genome sequenced S. epidermidis strains: the avirulent, non-biofilm forming ATCC12228 and the virulent, strongly adherent biofilm forming ATCC35984 (RP62A).

Accumulating evidence indicates that mitochondria have a key role in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). C57BL/6J mice were fed a choline-deficient, ethionine-supplemented (CDE) diet. Histological studies demonstrated accumulation of fat vacuoles in up to 90% of hepatocytes in mice fed the CDE diet for 14 days.

This study hypothesized that upregulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) would preserve the metabolic status of the liver under conditions of steatosis and acute inflammation. Wild-type C57BL/6J and C57BL/6 iNOS-knockout (-/-) mice were fed a choline-deficient ethionine-supplemented diet (CDE). Mice were also injected with 5 mg/kg lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to induce endotoxemia.
