Studies were undertaken to determine whether nitric oxide (NO) is involved in induction of the prolactin surge on proestrus and in that induced by ovarian steroids in ovariectomized (ovx) rats, by using inhibitors of NO synthase, the enzyme that generates NO. Two week-ovariectomized rats were treated either with estradiol benzoate (EB, 30 micrograms/rat, s.c.) alone, or with EB and 2 days later with progesterone (P, 2 mg/rat, s.c.) to evoke a prolactin surge in the afternoon. Injections of the NO synthase inhibitor Nw-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (40 mg/kg, s.c.) at 10.000, 12.00, and 14.00 h completely suppressed the steroid-induced prolactin surge in the afternoon. Similarly, another NO synthase inhibitor, Nw-nitro-L-arginine (100 mg/kg, s.c.), injected at 1000, 1200, and 1400 h on proestrus suppressed prolactin and luteinizing hormone (LH) surges, but failed to alter the daily increase of corticosterone. These studies confirm our earlier report and show that NO is involved in the complex processes that initiate the afternoon prolactin and LH surges of proestrus.

The placenta secretes a prolactin (PRL)-like hormone PRL3B1 (placental lactogen II), a luteotropic hormone essential for maintaining pregnancy until labor in mice. A report from 1984 examined the secretion pattern of PRL3B1 in prepartum mice. In the current study, we found contradictory findings in the secretion pattern that invalidate the previous report.

The NR4A nuclear receptor family (NR4As), encompassing NR4A1, NR4A2, and NR4A3, exerts pivotal roles in cellular processes through intricate expression patterns and interactions. Despite the influence of some NR4As on anterior pituitary functions regulated by the hypothalamus, their physiological expression patterns remain unclear. In our prior work, we demonstrated the specific upregulation of NR4A3 in the rat anterior pituitary gland during the proestrus afternoon, coinciding with a gonadotropin surge.

Purpose: While there are reports of treatment-related endocrine disruptions and catecholamine surges in pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma (PPGL) patients treated with [Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE therapy, the spectrum of these abnormalities in the immediate post-treatment period (within 48 hours) has not been previously evaluated and is likely underestimated.

The RF-amide peptides comprise a family of neuropeptides that includes the kisspeptin (Kp), the natural ligand of kisspeptin receptor (Kiss1r), and the RFamide-related peptide 3 (RFRP-3) that binds preferentially to the neuropeptide FF receptor 1 (Npffr1). Kp stimulates prolactin (PRL) secretion through the inhibition of tuberoinfundibular dopaminergic (TIDA) neurons. Because Kp also has affinity to Npffr1, we investigated the role of Npffr1 in the control of PRL secretion by Kp and RFRP-3.
