Achondroplasia is an autosomal dominant condition resulting in skeletal dysplasia and abnormal endochondral bone formation. Many clinical features, including short stature, macroglossia, midface retrusion, and restrictive lung disease, may pose anesthetic and surgical risks. We present a case of a 36-year-old female with right inflammatory breast cancer who underwent immediate autologous breast reconstruction with a deep inferior epigastric perforator flap complicated by hypoxic respiratory failure.

Introduction: While severe macroglossia in Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is often treated with tongue reduction surgery, most patients with mild to moderate macroglossia are nonsurgically managed. Given that outcomes for these conservatively managed patients are not well characterized, this study aims to describe the natural history of patients with macroglossia and BWS who did not undergo early surgery.
Methods: Records of patients with BWS and macroglossia seen between 2004-2024 were reviewed.

Evidence suggests that individuals with Down syndrome (DS) have a high prevalence of periodontal disease (PD). Factors such as muscular hypotonia, macroglossia, intellectual deficits, and reduced motor coordination, often combined with inadequate dietary habits, contribute to the development of PD. Additionally, a compromised immune response may explain the altered inflammatory profile that affects the systemic and oral health of this population.

Amyloidosis derived from abnormal extracellular fibril deposits may contribute to multiple organ dysfunctions. The recognition of amyloidosis-associated orofacial changes may be beneficial for the early diagnosis of this systemic pathology and the underlying diseases. This retrospective study aimed to determine the characteristics of orofacial amyloidosis to aid dentists in the recognition of this disease.
