A 16-year-old girl was stung in the Netherlands by a poisonous scorpion which had travelled in her suitcase from Turkey. Although she came to the emergency department immediately and had the (dead) scorpion with her, it proved to be extremely difficult to devise effective therapy quickly. There were only three ampoules of antiserum in the country, none of them against the scorpion concerned: Buthus gibbosus, a relatively dangerous species. Eventually, antiserum was flewn in from the Institut Pasteur near Paris, it was available 16 h after the patient came to the hospital. The antiserum was not used as the patient gradually recovered.

Iran is a biodiversity hotspot of scorpions with 80 recorded species. Thus, scorpion envenomation is a serious public health problem in the country. Here, we used habitat suitability modeling to assess the spatial distribution of scorpions in Iran.

Background: Discovering insecticidal proteins with high activity and strict insect specificity and applying them to the biological control of insect pests is of great significance. Oral LqhIT2 has insecticidal activity, which most other insecticidal neurotoxin proteins do not have, but the large-scale preparation of the toxin is difficult and one of the obstacles to determining its anti-insect potential for biological control.
Results: In this study, the expression level of recombinant LqhIT2 (rLqhIT2) in Pichia pastoris was as high as 1.

Flexible pressure sensor is a crucial component of tactile sensors and plays an integral role in numerous significant fields. Despite the considerable effort put forth, how to further improve sensitivity with ingenious yet easy-to-manufacture structures and apply them to emerging fields such as structure/materials recognition, human motion monitoring, and human-machine interaction remains a challenge. Here, we develop a highly sensitive flexible capacitive pressure sensor featuring a structured electrode layer with embedded microcracks and a dielectric layer with micro-convex structures, which are combined with an iontronic interface.

Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli poses a significant threat to public health due to its ability to confer resistance to broad-spectrum antimicrobials, especially third-generation cephalosporins. Herein, we report gut colonization by international clones of CTX-M-8-producing E. coli in scorpion mud turtles (Kinosternon scorpioides) from a captive breeding program in the Brazilian Amazon.

Providing mechanically adaptive performance to surfaces is significant in preserving materials from damage in variable environments, however, it has rarely been studied. Inspired by the mechanically adaptive behaviors of the surface microstructure on the carapace of desert scorpions and bark of desert tamarisks, a self-wrinkled mechanically adaptive patterned surface (SWMAPS) using one-step UV-curing and self-wrinkling technique is reported. Because of the fluorinated polyurethane photo-initiator formed by self-assembly at the top surface, UV-induced photo-crosslinking can spontaneously generate a gradient-crosslinked structure and wrinkled patterns with different morphology.
