Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Faculty of Medicine and Graduate School of Medicine, Hokkaido University, Kita-15 Nishi-7, Kita-ku, Sapporo City, Hokkaido 060-8638, Japan.

Esophagojejunal anastomotic fistula is difficult to treat because of continuous salivary flow. This report describes the innovative use of a negative pressure wound therapy device with a slit drain to treat an esophagojejunal anastomotic fistula after free jejunal transfer. Insertion of a slit drain was very effective for management of saliva.

Article Synopsis
  • Thoracostomy and chest tube placement are essential procedures for managing pleural diseases caused by fluid or air buildup in the pleural cavity, with historic methods evolving significantly since Hippocrates.
  • The development of closed drainage systems in the 19th century and advancements in materials, such as plastic and the Heimlich valve, have improved chest tube designs and functionality.
  • Modern techniques include various tube designs, digital monitoring systems, and the use of pleurodesis to prevent complications, ensuring that chest tube insertion continues to play a vital role in treating pleural conditions effectively.

One-step detection of nanoplastics in aquatic environments using a portable SERS chessboard substrate.

January 2025

Advanced Photonics Center, School of Electronic Science and Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing 210096, China. Electronic address:

Nanoplastics present a significant hazard to both the environment and human health. However, the development of rapid and sensitive analysis techniques for nanoplastics is limited by their small size, lack of specificity, and low concentrations. In this study, a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) chessboard substrate was introduced as a multi-channel platform for the pre-concentration and detection of nanoplastics, achieved by polydomain aggregating silver nanoparticles (PASN) on a hydrophilic and a punched hydrophobic PVDF combined filter membrane.

Background: Early detection of acute brain injury (ABI) at the bedside is critical in improving survival for patients with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support. We aimed to examine the safety of ultra-low-field (ULF; 0.064-T) portable magnetic resonance imaging (pMRI) in patients undergoing ECMO and to investigate the ABI frequency and types with ULF-pMRI.

Introduction: Ukraine's health and trauma system has been detrimentally impacted since the Russian Federation invasion in February 2022. The number and extent of injuries experienced in Ukraine because of trench warfare and high-intensity large-scale combat operations has not been seen in recent conflicts. Understanding attitudes and perceptions around the use of devices and products including MOVES (monitor, oxygen concentrator, ventilator, and suction system) and its use in the large-scale combat operation environment can inform lessons learned for improved prehospital care in Ukraine, as well as in other future conflicts.
