Tumorigenesis involves a complex series of steps. These steps are influenced by genetic predisposition and by lifestyle, tobacco and alcohol use, diet, and occupation. The way a person chooses to or is forced to live will influence the risk of developing cancer.

Molecular mechanism of ligand recognition and activation of lysophosphatidic acid receptor LPAR6.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

January 2025

Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine, Harbin Institute of Technology Center for Life Sciences, School of Life Science and Technology, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin 150001, China.

Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) exerts its physiological roles through the endothelialdifferentiation gene (EDG) family LPA receptors (LPAR1-3) or the non-EDG family LPA receptors (LPAR4-6). LPAR6 plays crucial roles in hair loss and cancer progression, yet its structural information is very limited. Here, we report the cryoelectron microscopy structure of LPA-bound human LPAR6 in complex with a mini G or G protein.

Natural enzymes are a class of biological catalysts that can catalyze a specific substrate. Although natural enzymes have catalytic activity, they are susceptible to the influence of external environment such as temperature, and storage requirements are more stringent. Since the first discovery of magnetic FeO nanoparticles with peroxidase-like activity in 2007, the research on nanoenzymes has entered a rapid development stage.

Social determinants of health and health outcomes in older cancer survivors.

Curr Opin Support Palliat Care

January 2025

Department of Medical Social Science, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois, USA.

Purpose Of The Review: Today, two-thirds of all cancer survivors are at least 65 years old. Older cancer survivors have complex care needs, and addressing their social determinants of health (SDoH) is critical for improving and managing survivorship outcomes for this uniquely vulnerable population, yet research specifically examining these associations remains limited and emergent. To this end, we describe the emergent body of evidence on the associations between SDoH domains and older cancer survivors' outcomes.

Gold Nanorods Decorated by Conjugated Microporous Polymers for Infrared Responsive Cytostatic Drug Delivery.

Langmuir

January 2025

Leibniz-Institut für Polymerforschung Dresden e.V., Hohe Straße 6, 01069 Dresden, Germany.

Near-infrared (NIR) controlled drug delivery systems have drawn a lot of attention throughout the past few decades due to the deep penetration depth and comparatively minor side effects of the stimulus. In this study, we introduce an innovative approach for gastric cancer treatment by combining photothermal infrared-sensitive gold nanorods (AuNRs) with a conjugated microporous polymer (CMP) to create a drug delivery system tailored for transporting the cytostatic drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). CMPs are fully conjugated networks with high internal surface areas that can be precisely tailored to the adsorption and transport of active compounds through the right choice of chemical functionalities.

Generation of upscaled quantities of human-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CM), for therapeutic or testing applications, is both expensive and time-consuming. Herein, a scalable bioprocess for hiPSC-CM expansion in stirred-tank bioreactors (STB) is developed. By combining the continuous activation of the Wnt pathway, through perfusion of CHIR99021, within a mild hypoxia environment, the expansion of hiPSC-CM as aggregates is maximized, reaching 4 billion of pure hiPSC-CM in 2L STB.
