Visual distinctiveness can enhance recency effects.

Experimental efforts to meliorate the modality effect have included attempts to make the visual stimulus more distinctive. McDowd and Madigan (1991) failed to find an enhanced recency effect in serial recall when the last item was made more distinct in terms of its color. In an attempt to extend this finding, three experiments were conducted in which visual distinctiveness was manipulated in a different manner, by combining the dimensions of physical size and coloration (i.e., whether the stimuli were solid or outlined in relief). Contrary to previous findings, recency was enhanced when the size and coloration of the last item differed from the other items in the list, regardless of whether the "distinctive" item was larger or smaller than the remaining items. The findings are considered in light of other research that has failed to obtain a similar enhanced recency effect, and their implications for current theories of the modality effect are discussed.

Background: To evaluate the associations between anatomical changes and visual outcomes after membrane peeling in eyes with different stages of idiopathic epiretinal membrane (iERM) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA).

Methods: All iERM eyes were graded into four stages based on the presence of ectopic inner foveal layers (EIFL) and underwent 23-gauge vitrectomy combined with ERM and internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling, while their fellow eyes were treated as the control group. OCTA was used to measure retinal thickness(RT), foveal avascular zone (FAZ)-related parameters and superficial and deep capillary plexus (SCP and DCP) layers using 6 × 6 mm scans before, 1 month and 3 months after surgery.

Primary aldosteronism (PA) is a common, potentially reversible, cause of hypertension. Distinguishing unilateral from bilateral PA is critical when deciding who should be offered surgery (unilateral adrenalectomy). Recent studies have shown that PET/CT with [C]metomidate can accurately identify unilateral PA, with localization of the causative aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA).

Object recognition under challenging real-world conditions, including partial occlusion, remains an enduring focus of investigation in cognitive visual neuroscience. This study addresses the insufficiently elucidated neural mechanisms and temporal dynamics involved in this complex process, concentrating on the persistent challenge of recognizing objects obscured by occlusion. Through the analysis of human EEG data, we decode feedback characteristics within frontotemporal networks, uncovering intricate neural mechanisms during occlusion coding, with a specific emphasis on processing complex stimuli such as occluded faces.

A series of sensors, designated S3R1-S3R4, were designed and synthesized for the detection of PO ions and toxic metals, specifically Hg and Cu ions. The colorimetric detection of PO ions using these sensors exhibited a distinct visual color transition from yellow to purple in organo-aqueous media. The intrinsic cavity-like structure in the thiosemicarbazide-based derivative S3R4 significantly enhances the binding affinity for Hg and Cu ions in organic media.

A new colorimetric fluorescent sensor QPEBT was developed by merging the N,N-di(2-picolyl)ethane-1,2-diamine and 2,2'-bithiophene moieties into the quinolimide backbone. QPEBT could sensitively detect Zn through the remarkable fluorescence enhancement with distinct color changes from light orange to pink in visible light and from ginger to orange-yellow in 365 nm UV irradiation. The 1:1 stoichiometry between QPEBT and Zn was verified by the spectra titrations, Job's and HRMS analyses, and theoretical calculations.
