The paper describes a learning programme for calculating the characteristics of arterial blood from the ventilation-perfusion ratios in the lungs by using a three-variable mathematical model of the lung. The lungs are presented as a set of three components which differ in ventilation and perfusion: 1) a fraction of ventilated and O2-perfused alveoles; 2) a fraction of non-perfused and ventilated alveoles; 3) a fraction of unventilated and non-perfused alveoles. Results of calculations are provided.

Fatty acid composition of phospholipids and neutral lipids from human diabetic small arteries and veins by a new TLC method.

Prostaglandins Leukot Essent Fatty Acids

The Diabetic Microangiopathy Unit, LIPHA-INSERM U352, INSA-Lyon, Villeurbanne, France.

It has been suggested that lipid peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) may play a role in the pathogenesis of diabetic complications. To test this hypothesis, we aimed to compare PUFA composition of small arteries and veins (< 500 microm diameter) obtained from diabetic or non-diabetic Guadeloupean patients undergoing arterio-venous shunt surgery before renal dialysis. Small forearm subcutaneous vessels were analysed by a new TLC method which involved inclusion of vascular biopies directly in alveoles made in the TLC gel and lyophilization onto the plate.

Four male mice (1-month-old) of BALB strain have been studied. Three types of cells participate in formation of cellular lining of the terminal branchioles: ciliated, Clara cells and villose cells which are included in the neuroepithelial bodies composition. Clara cells are numerous and they are similar in their ultrastructural organization, they contain a great number of polymorphous secretory granules, single mitochondria and a poorly developed endoplasmic reticulum.
