MRL/l strain mice, which possess a lymphoproliferative gene inducing swelling of systemic lymph nodes, develop a SLE (systemic lupus erythematosus)-like syndrome at around 8 w of age. MRL/n mice, which carry 99.6% of the genes of MRL/l mice, lack the gene for lymphoproliferation and exhibit only a slight degree of lymph node swelling late in life. This study investigated whether the salivary immune response caused by Streptococcus mutans(S. mutans) infection prevented dental caries in MRL/l and MRL/n mice after 8 w of age. A total of 10 MRL/l mice and 10 MRL/n mice were fed a commercial pellet diet without sucrose until 74 d of age, and then fed Diet 2000 containing 56% sucrose ad libitum from 75 to 130 d of age. On d 75, both strains of mice were inoculated with S. mutans JC-2 for 7 d. At 130 d of age, saliva samples were collected and caries scores were assessed. The results obtained suggested that the salivary immune response was one of the most important factors regulating caries occurrence.

Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by the infiltration of lymphocytes on salivary and lacrimal glands, resulting in their dysfunction. Patients suffering from severe pSS have an increased risk of developing multi-organ dysfunction syndrome due to the development of systemic inflammatory response, which results in immune cell-driven injury of the lungs, kidneys, liver, and brain. Therapeutic agents that are used for the treatment of severe pSS encounter various limitations and challenges that can impact their effectiveness.

This review provides a comprehensive overview of the current understanding of rice resistance to the brown planthopper (BPH), a major pest that poses significant threats to rice production through direct feeding damage and by transmitting viruses such as Rice grassy stunt virus (RGSV) and Rice ragged stunt virus (RRSV). We highlight the emergence of various BPH biotypes that have overcome specific resistance genes in rice. Advances in genetic mapping and cloning have identified 17 BPH resistance genes, classified into typical R genes encoding nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat (NLR) proteins and atypical R genes such as lectin receptor kinases and proteins affecting cell wall composition.

: Human β-defensin 2 (HBD2) is a protein that plays an important role in activating the immune system by modulating spinal pathways and the inflammatory response. According to previous research, HBD2 was proven to be important in chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) (their values were significantly elevated in CSU patients, with a significant correlation between HBD2 levels and the percentage of peripheral basophils, suggesting that elevated HBD2 levels may be a potential marker of basophil and mast cell activation), which led us to additional research on the HBD2 molecule in isolated chronic angioedema. The aim of this research is to examine HBD2 values in the saliva and serum of patients with isolated angioedema, as a potential biomarker of the disease.

The hemoflagellate parasite is transmitted by triatomine kissing bugs and may co-infect humans together with its Chagas disease-causing congener . Using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and antimicrobial assays, we studied () the temporal and spatial distribution of in common bed bugs, , following oral ingestion and hemocoelic injection of and () the immune responses of bed bugs induced by infections. Irrespective of infection mode, no live were present in the bed bugs' hemolymph, salivary glands, or feces.

Ticks have coevolved with their hosts over millions of years, developing the ability to evade hemostatic, inflammatory, and immunological responses. Salivary molecules from these vectors bind to cytokines, chemokines, antibodies, complement system proteins, vasodilators, and molecules involved in coagulation and platelet aggregation, among others, inhibiting or blocking their activities. Initially studied to understand the complexities of tick-host interactions, these molecules have been more recently recognized for their potential clinical applications.
